“No Surprises and That's a Good Thing”
Reviewed July 17, 2014

We had only stayed at one other Aloft before, the one in Leawood, Kansas. The room we stayed at here was virtually identical to that one. Indeed, we thought we were back in Kansas. The only difference we could find was that the thermostat was located on a different wall--no joke.

After having many hit or misses with various Hilton hotels while traveling all over the country by car, we were thrilled about the consistency of the Aloft. Consistency can be a good thing and in this case it was. You are guaranteed an immaculately clean room and extremely comfortable beds. In addition, the space, while tight, is used very wisely.

That said, there are some odd quirks about this hotel, which I presume is true throughout all Aloft hotels since we found these quirks true in Kansas as well. The funky sink looks more like a toilet bowl sitting on a counter and is not the most functional. The shower and toilet are separate from the sink (we liked that) but for some reason the one and only hook where you can hang your towel or bathrobe is in the back corner by the toilet (a very tight corner I might add) and not right outside the shower. There is no place to put your clothes in the "shower area" other than the floor or on the toilet. If you are traveling with a spouse and child--as was our case--you have no real privacy. This is because the bathroom facilities are on the flip side of a three-quarter length wall with the beds on the other side. The lighting is quirky too. The light that you must turn on if you go to the bathroom in the middle of the night also illuminates above the two beds. That is not something anyone sharing the room with you truly appreciates in the middle of the night.

All of the quirks seem to be corporate decisions as individuality doesn't appear to exist with Aloft hotels--at least not based on the two Aloft properties where we have stayed. But that was not a bad thing in our case. We were quite happy with our experience at this property. The staff was extremely helpful. We arrived during a severe thunderstorm and were greeted right away. When we dashed across the street to a restaurant for dinner, one of the bellhops lent us his umbrella. Prior to leaving the hotel for dinner, the gentleman at the front desk (it's really not a front desk but some sort of funky circular, hip-looking "area" right out of a spaceship) printed out menus for us from restaurants nearby.

Clean, reasonably priced and rooms are soundproof (greatly appreciated...a few nights earlier at a hotel I could actually hear the conversation coming from the room next door). All and all a very positive experience--one of many in Chapel Hill.

Location is very easy to find and right in center if Chapel Hill. Two minutes from UNC.
Parking in cover garage ($10)
Lobby ultra modern -very clean and welcoming. Bar and pool table surrounded with lounge area. Little market and hot breakfast in morning (good)
Check in staff pleasant. Indoor pool and workout room.
Room was very nice two very comfortable beds workstation and a mini fridge.
We were traveling with two kids. At check in I requester a roll away. They did not have but did have blowup beds -FREE for entire stay. Even had cute angry birds bedding.
Best thing about this hotel...while making reservations I was looking fir discounts since we stayed 4days (any little bit helps)
The rate was first night regular price then ever other night was the year of hour birth. SO I get a very nice resort type room for $64. Super bargain!!!!!

This stay was my first experience in an Aloft. The concept is refreshing; the feel of the hotel is modern and fun - a perfect place for a stay with a teenager. Check-in was a breeze, the staff is friendly. Rooms afforded a good night's sleep with comfortable beds and shades to keep the room dark. The location is just a couple minute's drive to the downtown area. All-in-all, very nice place to stay.

I arrived yesterday with two teens in tow. The purchase of this trip was for my 15 year old to attend camp at UNC. It's a good location. The value exceptional. The room is large enough for three with ample storage, two queen platform beds, work area, large flatscreen TV, BLISS products, and small sitting area. Very pleased. There is no room service but they have a "re:fuel" eatery in the lobby that has just about enough options to tie you over until next meal. they do serve "to order" breakfast but limited. They have a bar, small work out room, small indoor pool, and nice lobby area with pool table.

Great value, great location, STARWOOD hit a home run with this Loft Style Concept!

This was my third stay with an Aloft, and I've been consistently impressed and pleased with this Starwood Brand. It's modern, fresh and perfect for business travelers who like to mix their work with a little pleasure.

This particular one has free valet service since there's no open parking lot. Kind of like Vegas, the attendant is always on duty. Space is limited so you'll need to let them know when you want your car back the next day.

As with all Alofts, everything is built for speed and ease. Check-in is located front and center upon entry at a stand-alone rounded counter. A wide-open convenience style cafe is located in the front corner of the lobby where you can grab water, hot or cold breakfast and even frozen food to be microwaved if you'd like.

For leisure, all Alofts have a "WXYZ Bar" and a pool table with a couple of tables and chairs also in the lobby, and Chapel Hill's is no different in that sense. There's also some great outdoor space off to the side where you can bring your cocktail and grab a smoke.

Rooms have the feel of a modern studio apartment. Large flat screen hanging up on the wall right across from your bed. Desk off to the side looking out a large window. Shower in a glass stall (sorry, no tub).

As for location, you're in a complex about 10 minutes from UNC campus with some decent restaurant / sports bar and shopping options only feet away.

As usual, very pleased with Aloft!

After a horrific roach ordeal at the chapel hill university inn, I checked in at 2am hoping they had a room available. They were helpful and extremely courteous given my frantic state. The rooms were spotless and the bathrooms were modem chic! Great stay and great price.!
