We had only stayed at one other Aloft before, the one in Leawood, Kansas. The room we stayed at here was virtually identical to that one. Indeed, we thought we were back in Kansas. The only difference we could find was that the thermostat was located on a different wall--no joke.
After having many hit or misses with various Hilton hotels while traveling all over the country by car, we were thrilled about the consistency of the Aloft. Consistency can be a good thing and in this case it was. You are guaranteed an immaculately clean room and extremely comfortable beds. In addition, the space, while tight, is used very wisely.
That said, there are some odd quirks about this hotel, which I presume is true throughout all Aloft hotels since we found these quirks true in Kansas as well. The funky sink looks more like a toilet bowl sitting on a counter and is not the most functional. The shower and toilet are separate from the sink (we liked that) but for some reason the one and only hook where you can hang your towel or bathrobe is in the back corner by the toilet (a very tight corner I might add) and not right outside the shower. There is no place to put your clothes in the "shower area" other than the floor or on the toilet. If you are traveling with a spouse and child--as was our case--you have no real privacy. This is because the bathroom facilities are on the flip side of a three-quarter length wall with the beds on the other side. The lighting is quirky too. The light that you must turn on if you go to the bathroom in the middle of the night also illuminates above the two beds. That is not something anyone sharing the room with you truly appreciates in the middle of the night.
All of the quirks seem to be corporate decisions as individuality doesn't appear to exist with Aloft hotels--at least not based on the two Aloft properties where we have stayed. But that was not a bad thing in our case. We were quite happy with our experience at this property. The staff was extremely helpful. We arrived during a severe thunderstorm and were greeted right away. When we dashed across the street to a restaurant for dinner, one of the bellhops lent us his umbrella. Prior to leaving the hotel for dinner, the gentleman at the front desk (it's really not a front desk but some sort of funky circular, hip-looking "area" right out of a spaceship) printed out menus for us from restaurants nearby.
Clean, reasonably priced and rooms are soundproof (greatly appreciated...a few nights earlier at a hotel I could actually hear the conversation coming from the room next door). All and all a very positive experience--one of many in Chapel Hill.
