“Excellent stay at hip hotel”
Reviewed March 28, 2011

We stayed at Aloft hotel while visiting UNC with our daughter and her friend. The hotel staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The hotel's location was perfect for visiting the campus. The room was comfortable. Loved the hip feel of the hotel - had fun playing pool and hanging out at the bar. We would definitely stay here again.

The hotel is very nice, clean and friendly staff. This was our first stay at an Aloft and while I enjoyed it there are a few things I didn't like about the room when traveling with children. No night in the bath, no place to put suitcases away and no place to sit because the suitcases were on the bench. It was a bit cramped for the 3 of us, but all in all enjoyed the lobby atmosphere with games and the pool table.

My colleagues and I stayed at the aloft Chapel Hill a few weeks ago and were really impressed with the hotel's amenities, location and staff. Brad and Karen were especially helpful and made our stay a great one. All of the staff from the shuttle driver to the valet parking attendants were professional in their interactions with us. This is a very good option for business travelers coming to the Triangle area.

I liked the whole feel of this place. The guys at the check-in area were super-friendly. Spoke to us on our way out when we were going to dinner; then asked how it was when we got back. There were really good food choices (healthy choices, including fresh fruit) for sale any time day or night in the lobby. Liked the salt-water pool, the walk-in showers in the room, the storage shelves and refrigerator in the room. Also parking was free. We could have walked up the hill into Chapel Hill/UNC, but instead took a walk along the walk/bike trail to Meadowmont and continued walking in that neighborhood. There is a tunnel on the walking path that goes under Highway 54.

We had a fabulous time at this hotel during our mini-staycation for Valentine's weekend. We enjoyed delicious drinks at the bar, which was a great change of pace from the typical bars on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. It actually felt like we were in a different city for the night, which was exactly what we were looking for – a getaway without getting away. The room itself was really comfortable and we loved all the modern touches, including the naturally lit shower. This hotel is new, clean, convenient and affordable - with friendly and accomodating staff. It's apparent how much thought went into the design of these hotels - efficiency is really outstanding, but style and ambience weren't compromised in the least. I would recommend this hotel to young couples, business travelers and singles traveling through Chapel Hill or looking for a little in-town escape.

I almost forgot one of the best parts - - - they take PETS! While we didn't have ours with us that night, it was so much fun to see the dogs checking in and out with their owners in the lobby.

Everything about my stay at the Aloft was perfect. I was there as part of a comedy festival - and they were beyond excellent to stay at. Every staff member was extremely pleasant - from the welcome team of Corey and Andrew at the front to the housekeeping staff and the bartenders. The hotel itself is thoughtfully designed to be in line with how you really use a hotel - no dresser in the room, great bathrooms, excellent beds and impeccable linens. The decor is clean and modern, without being stark. The lobby and lounge were relaxing and fun, with games, comfy chairs, couches, and a variety of seating options. And one final time, the staff was amazing and really made the stay. Go Aloft!

First let me give you the plusses: the hotel is clean and well-run, the people who work there could not be nicer, the pool is small but great. The rooms are big.
However, this hotel is one of the weirdest I've ever stayed at. It's like a beautiful man or woman who is incredibly shallow and has nothing to say. The rooms—get ready for this—HAVE NO DRAWERS! This may be to go along with their "hip" minimalist decor, but come on: NO DRAWERS! Where were my wife, child and I supposed to put our underwear and socks?! And there's no closet either, just hangers hanging coming toward you rather than going across (this only heightens the inconvenience).
Now to the shower: Well, it did work. But it was impossible to take a shower with a lot of water pressure without it being super hot: the way the shower temperature worked was infuriating. If you don't want to take a scalding shower, you're forced to take a weak one.
There were no plastic or glass cups in the bathroom. Thus my wife and I found ourselves using the paper cups—which came with the room's coffee machine—when it came to brushing our teeth. In addition, the trashcans in the room had no plastic bags in them, so we could not throw out "wet" trash at all. We had to, for example, let our unused ice cream melt in the sink! Ugh.
There was also no card in the room telling us which channels were on which number on the TV. This is virtually unheard of in hotels. Maybe the Aloft chain is concerned with the environment but no cups, no plastic bags, no TV station card??? Plus, many good hotels usually have some magazine that acts as a guide to the hotel and to the area you're in...all this room had was a copy of Spin Magazine from 2010.
Checking in was also bad: the desk is a circle, not a desk, so there's no order to it. When we did check in, I asked the very nice man at the desk for a quiet room because we had a young child...and he gave us the one CLOSEST TO THE ELEVATOR. (But he WAS very nice.) I should also point out that one morning we asked for our car from the valet, waited a few minutes, then he drove up with the wrong car. An innocent and understandable mistake, but it serves as an indicator of how mixed-up this place is.
Oh yes. They have two terminals in the lobby where you can check in to your flight. It took me about 8 minutes to go through the process whereupon I was then informed the printed was broken.
And finally, though they do have a machine which makes pretty indifferent espresso drinks (for $3.00), it would be nice if they had a coffee maker that guests could use all day long and not be charged for.
But, as I said, the people working there were very helpful and sweet. I have no complaints about them. It's just the hotel in general which needs to be entirely rethought.
