“Wonderful Rest with Family”
Reviewed June 21, 2011

First trip to High Hampton Inn and it was wonderful. We stayed in Cabin #90 and while there was not A/C we sleep with the windows and door open and we cool. Meals in the dining room are buffet and were also quite good. Lovely salads and entrees. The staff was the best! Very friendly and helpful. My son loved playing bingo and other activities in the lobby following dinner nightly. There is not TV or telephones in the rooms, just old fashioned fun. Lovely grounds and mountain landscape. We especially loved swimming in the lake and hiking the trails. This is a great resort if your family likes to be together, outdoor and active.

We came to the Inn for a family gathering and it was a complete nightmare. First off, there are NO ELEVATORS, so for someone who has mobility issues or a hard time getting around... good luck, you have to have someone bring your luggage up. Then to find out that there's no AC, no TV, no PHONES in any of the rooms to call the front desk, and NO CELL PHONE SIGNAL. In order to call my husband, I had to stand on a balcony outside in the rain to try and call him. Also, there are no handbars on any of the bathrooms/showers for people who need help getting in and out to shower. Oh, and if you stay in one of the cottages, you have to pay extra to rent a golf cart to get your luggage to and from the cottage, plus any guests that may have mobility issues because the cottages are down a steep hill. To boot, the front desk staff is completely clueless. I wound up standing at the front desk for 5 minutes until one of the two clerks, who were just aimlessly chatted away finally noticed me. All this from a overpriced dump that INSISTS that guests "dress up" for dinner and wear a coat and tie. Um, Okay. The only plus is that the food is pretty good and the view of the mountain is nice, but besides that it was not worth it.

Needless to say I won't be venturing back there ever again. Save your money and stay in the 21st Century by going to another hotel!

High Hampton Inn appreciates the opportunity to respond to each review it receives. “An ADA nightmare and a total complete rip off” is particularly troublesome in several areas. To begin, we are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and as such, items like an elevator will not be seen in the Inn. We believe that we are very up front with our guests in that regard as well as alerting our new guests that we do not have TV’s or phones in the rooms which is in every piece of literature we produce. The majority of our client base rejects the notion of TV’s and phones because they want to reconnect with their family, friends and (for a short period of time) unplug. We do however offer internet in the Inn, pro shop, spa, meeting rooms and tavern so emails and communication can still flow for those who need to check in periodically. The assumption that there are no hand bars on any bathrooms/showers is simply not true. It is true that we do not have them in every room, but when the reservation is taken and it is noted that mobility may be an issue we certainly accommodate those who have special needs. Our clientele is older and we believe we are very sensitive to match up rooms/cottages with the needs of our guests based on the information we obtain from them. For clarification, no one is required to pay for a golf cart to obtain their luggage. We have a full time bellmen staff ready to assist and carry luggage. If a guest wants a golf cart for the convenience of getting around the estate there is a daily charge that is assessed. That is an option that the guests elect to take not dictated by the resort. In closing, we are disappointed that this guest had a less than pleasant experience. Fortunately, the vast majority of our guests appreciates the rustic nature of this resort and chooses to return for generations.
Respectfully and thank you

I stayed in this hotel with my wife & two kids for 3 nights in August 2010 & totally enjoyed every minute of our stay. After spending 10 days in Virginia Beach we decided to cool down in the mountings: High Hampton Inn is the perfect place for it! Working in hotel industry for many years, I believe HH is the best family oriented place in North America. We drove about 1500 km / 810 miles from Toronto & it was more than worth it! Staff performance exceeded any high expectations as well as hotel’s food: gourmet breakfast, lunch & dinner plus tea-time in the lobby. This is truly five-star / four diamond property with extreme focus on guest satisfaction. We are definitely coming back this year, possibly with couple of other Canadian families!

We have made High Hampton the site of our annual golf retreat for over 15 years. The group has grown to as many as 28 men who all anxiously await Memorial Day weekend to arrive. Our group chooses the option of cabin rentals and we have always been pleased with our stays. The staff at the inn always anticipates our arrival and does a fine job of individually checking in each member of our group.
The staff at the golf pro shop always takes care of our group in every way possible. We play four consecutive days and 36 holes on each of the first three days. There are very few clubs that will offer a group up to 14 tee times for three straight days and also have the accommodations that we enjoy so much. The course is not that long, but puts an emphasis on control and creativity! The staff always makes it feel like we "own" the course for those four days and I don't see any reason that we would change the destination anytime soon!

I've been coming to the High Hampton Inn over Labor Day weekend for several years with my parents. It's a weekend we look forward to all year! The High Hampton Inn is not a fancy place - which is perfect! In fact, I think it's a treat to not have cell phone reception - who needs it (except to brag to others that aren't there)!? We love seeing many of the same families year after year.

The grounds are beautiful and the location in the Cashiers is heaven. After a fun day of hiking/golf/shopping, we love sitting on the porch with a glass of wine while taking in the mountain air before a delicious supper. There's no better place for a nightcap than in the "bar" with dancing and fun live music with guests of all ages - from 3-93! I must admit, my very favorite part of the whole weekend (and maybe year) is the Labor Day picnic! There's absolutely nothing better than bbq, Bluegrass and square dancing!

I travel to the High Hampton Inn from California every year and wouldn't miss it for the world! If you can appreciate crisp mountain air, no-frills family fun and a beautiful inn in the heart of the North Carolina mountains, the High Hampton Inn is the perfect place for you!

Stayed at this "rustic" (read: falling apart) inn where my brother-in-law was having his wedding. While the views and the wedding were great, the rest of the service, accomodations and golf were anything but...
This fiasco started when my wife was quoted one price over the phone and we came to find out that the actual price was double what we were quoted AFTER WE HAD ARRIVED FROM A 7 HOUR DRIVE. While management told us that they could in fact verify that we had been quoted a certian price (they could even give us the time when we were quoted the price) they informed us that the person on their staff quoting us the price did not know what he was talking about so they were not going to honor the initial quote. This happened again when we were told by the Hampton staff that certian meals were included in our package only to find out that once more the staff telling us this simply "didn't know better". This inability to nail down something as simple as a room fee ended up costing us roughly $200.00. (Just for the room).
The first night in the bar, at my brother in law's first reception, we were told to be quiet (though the wedding party had secured the space until closing (which was 10pm)) The bar staff seemed put out and was, to put it mildly, rude thoughout the evening.

The second day was spent on the glof course. The course is only OK if you like powerlines and

I returned to my room around 1pm to find the bathroom toilet was overflowing. I immediatly went to the front desk...maintainance did not show until after 7pm while we were at the wedding.
The rooms during the day were scortching hot (65-70d outside) and in the evenings were cold (45-50d outside)

I can recommend the setting for a wedding (although my Brother-in-law said he was nickled and dimed to death) and the grounds were nice. However, The staff was uniformally uninformed and rude, the cabins were overpriced and the golf course...well...there are much better for the price.

save yourself the headache. THIS PLACE SUCKS.

High Hampton Inn appreciates the opportunity to respond to reviews (in rare cases) when our 89 years of operational credibility may be in question. The review entitled “Rip Off” would be exactly that if the circumstances were as written. However, the property has a slightly different version that we felt needed to be shared.

The initial reservation was made for one person for one night. A rate was quoted. The reservation was then changed three weeks later adding an additional adult. Upon arrival there were two adults and two children. We honored the originally quoted rate (1 person) and added the two additional children. We thought that that was the honorable thing to do and at the time our guests seemed to be appreciative.

Our property is in a mountain location where our guests enjoy the cool evening nights. Windows are typically left open for the mountain air therefore; we are sensitive to noise after 10:00 PM. Our Tavern is never committed to one single group and we typically ask our guests to be subdued after 10:00PM and close shortly thereafter. This particular evening we allowed our guests to be in the Tavern until midnight as long as they understood we had other guests in the Inn. This is atypical of how we normally operate. We thought that allowing the celebration to continue beyond normal hours would be perceived as being hospitable.

The overflowing toilet (with which we apologize for) was reported to maintenance promptly when we were made aware of the situation. Maintenance went to the room three times but the “Do Not Disturb” sign was clearly posted. When our guest came up to go to the wedding, they advised us to tell maintenance to fix the problem while they were out, which we did.

We were disappointed when we read the review however; our ability to respond is appreciated. We take great pride in this family owned resort and our daily goal is to exceed our guest’s expectation. Disappointingly, we did not in this case, but the circumstances were such that we tried at every juncture only to find that our outreach was not enough.
Respectfully,
Clifford Meads
