Description: Herons delivers a dining experience that is both refined and relaxed. Led by James Beard Semifinalist in 2016 and 2017, Executive Chef Steven Greene, the expertly trained staff warms the room, providing seamless service that helps guests enjoy the pleasures of an elegant meal. The main dining room offers a full view of the kitchen, while floor-to-ceiling windows let in plenty of natural light and overlook the terrace, lawn and wooded lake beyond. In addition to the 98-seat main dining room, a semi-private dining room seats up to eight, while the private dining room accommodates 12 and showcases pottery by North Carolina artist Ben Owen. Outdoor seating invites al fresco dining in the spring, summer and fall. The neutral palette of the décor in Herons provides a sophisticated, yet understated backdrop to the bright and inspired flavor combinations artfully presented. The dinner menu changes seasonally and draws heavily on produce harvested from The Umstead’s own sustainable farm. The exceptional quality of Herons’ wine list been recognized with a prestigious “Award of Excellence” from Wine Spectator.

Sophisticated. Elegant. Executive wait staff. Artistic cuisine that is as delightful to the eye as it is to the palate. Dining taken to a different level. A wonderful place to go for that "special occasion". It is expensive but most definitely worth it. We will be back!

“Wonderful but St. Jacques is better for the money”
Reviewed January 16, 2014

This is a dining experience. I'm talking full on multiple servers, choice between three and four courses. They do have a vegetarian option, which is nice, but only one. The menu is seasonal, so it changes depending on the produce for the time of year. We went late fall - heavy on greens, pumpkins, that sort of thing. Bartenders were fantastic as was wine selection. Service was excellent but a little hovery for my taste. Meal was good with perfect presentation but the chef almost over does it. Sometimes simple is better. My only real complaint - and the reason for four stars rather than five - was the dessert - all choices were weird. There's nothing wrong with a traditional piece of cake or brownie or something. Even the waiter acknowledged that the dessert choices were ridiculous. He did give us some Umstead rock chocolates on our way out and they were a thousand times better than the actual desserts. I highly recommend this restaurant for special occasions and be prepared to pay $$$$$. My favorite place in Raleigh for this kind of meal is St. Jacques, as it has a warmer atmosphere and much better desserts, but this would probably be my second choice.

“Great Service”
Reviewed January 11, 2014

We visited Herons in celebration of our 5th anniversary a few years ago and decided to return for our 11th. We had a wonderful time. The service was great. The food was outstanding and the ambiance was romantic. If we are in the triangle area again, we may be back there to celebrate our 12th anniversary.

“Outstanding”

Service and meals were top quality, with interesting and delicious three and four course offerings as well as a Chef's tasting menu. Not one to be missed if you are in the Triangle.

We celebrated our wedding night at the Umstead and enjoyed a fantastic meal at Herons. The food and service were impeccable. I can't believe how lucky Cary is to have such a world class restaurant!
