Whether its a trip to the spa, an overnight stay in the hotel, or a meal in Herons....this is a nice place. We enjoy the spa and have been there a number of times for just about every treatment on their menu....all fantastic. It does depend on the experience of the staff, but most are really good. The prices are on the upper end, but the spa offers a lot. The hotel itself is very nice, comfortable and located centrally to many restaurants. The restaurant, Herons is very phroo phroo and not exactly what we would repeat many times, but for a special occasion...very nice! Plan on spending some money - definitely on the higher end.

In March 2013, stayed as a guest at the Umstead Hotel and was delighted with the service and hotel amenities. The staff is excellent with full attention to service. Dined one evening at the Bar & Lounge – the foods was good & live evening entertainment lovely! Rooms are large, quiet, bed comfortable & well appointed – perfect for business or leisure travel. The bathroom in the room was divine – really large with, of course, a spa-like feel & finishings well above par. The property is nestled within quiet woods, with a lake and beautiful gardens to walk / jog around…wonderful place to unwind.

I live fairly close by & travel to the hotel for the top-notch spa treatments and facilities – the spa property speaks to the attention to detail necessary to be ranked one of the top spas in the US.

Love this place. I am a local Realtor and this is a place I recommend to my out of town clients, never once heard a complaint. If you are in town, its a wonderful place to have a great meal. Try their spa too, its my 'go to place' for when I need to decompress. The staff is always professional. The hotel located just off the freeway, nearby is Starbucks, Carolina Café, Ruth Chris, etc. This company also runs a An, which is nearby, Asian fusion style cooking, another great restaurant.

A perfect place to enjoy 5 star service without leaving the triangle. If you can't find a petsitter and dont mind paying a deposit you can bring your small dog along for the trip. Ran into a big Hollywood star in the elevator (no name dropping) and he commented on how cute our dog was! Our room was small but beautiful. Great porch and view of the the grounds. Hard to believe that something this nice is just through the woods off I-40! Great pool, great spa, great area to sit around and enjoy the fire at night on the back patio.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review of The Umstead Hotel and Spa. I am delighted to know that you and your dog enjoyed your stay! We feel very fortunate to have such a convenient location to all that the Triangle has to offer with the secluded setting. Many guests comment on this point and we enjoy seeing the surprise and delight when someone walks in the front door to see the beauty.

We hope to welcome you back for another staycation in the future!

My husband surprised me with a stay-cation for our anniversary at The Umstead. From the moment our car pulled up to the hotel it was excellent service. The lobby was so grand with soft piano playing near the bar. The rooms were truly 5star although I expected for them to be larger. Nothing but top of the line condiments for guest. The balconies face a wooded area and aren't very private however you feel secluded. I had the luxury of enjoying a two hour massage in their spa which was amazing!!! Last but not least the restaurant Herron's is 5 star and that's all that needs to be said. Would recommend to any and everybody !

This hotel had outstanding service and very nice rooms. Overall, I enjoyed the hotel a lot. I think it suffered a bit from an identity crisis - I could not quite figure out if it was a getaway resort or a business hotel. It suited quite well as a business hotel, although they recommended reservations for breakfast mid week. (I did not make them, and had to wait a bit for a table in the morning) When traveling for business I typically like quick breakfasts (especially buffets where you can be in and out) but that was not the case here. Overall, it was a very nice place, and plan on staying here again the next month when I am in the area, and just getting room service in the morning.

To stay at the Umstead Hotel (U.S. News list of the Best Hotels in the USA) is an absolute treat; but even if you do not have a room there, it is worth a visit for a meal or drink just to 'BE' there. The modern architecture and landscape design honor the neighboring State Park of the same name. The natural artistic theme continues inside where the Art Deco influenced interiors with gorgeous textiles, and collections from North Carolina's finest artists makes me feel inspired and serene. Heron's restaurant is among our area's finest, with the atmosphere and menu consistent with the rest of the establishment in honoring the environment and traditions of North Carolina. Expect prices to be similar to other highly-awarded (and highly priced) establishments; but brunch, lunch, or just a drink can be had relatively inexpensively and enjoyed in the most beautiful of surroundings. I have often been there when a harpist was playing ... adding even more to the heavenly atmosphere.
