Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham Carolina Beach

We rolled into Wilmington at 1:00 am on a Tuesday morning thinking that we could get a room at our favorite hotel in Wilmington...but they were booked up. So we drove in to Carolina Beach and wheeled into the Microtel Inn and Suites really not expecting to find a vacancy this close to the ocean. We had never stayed here before but the manager at the booked up hotel suggested them. Luckily they did have some rooms and I must say that the front desk lady was very nice and gave us an excellent rate. The room was fine. The carpets are due to be replaced but the beds were comfortable and everything worked. We fell asleep listening to the bullfrogs in the pond behind the hotel. Checkout was a breeze. Once again- warm and friendly staff. We were thankful to get an affordable room that night.

most impressed with the woman that worked the night shift. I went downstairs at 6 am and she was helpful and courteous and made me feel right at home while I was hanging out at the pool and lobby while the others in my part was still asleep. She let me know when the breakfast was ready. She turned on the TV for me. She smiled as she went about her work.my grandson had just gotten married the night before and was staying there, she was interested in the event, she got a bottle of wine for me to give to the newlyweds and gave me a mug with the hotel phone number on it that I will keep for future reference and referral. She told me where I could go at that early hour to have the photos of the wedding developed to give to the newly weds with the bottle of wine. She is the reason I will be back

Good location for the $. Not very clean, although there weren't bedbugs in our room. The breakfast was included with the room but it was mostly carbs and not very good. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. More oversight needed with the housekeeping staff and breakfast room staff. To be fair, we didn't complain when we were there so they really didn't have a chance to make it better. But...doesn't every business check on their staff??

We hardly ever go to the beach during peak season due to the crowds & high cost of accommodations but with a few days off, decided on the spur of the moment to go this past Saturday. We should have arrived on Friday because by Saturday there were almost no rooms to be found & if there were, there was a 2 night minimum but we were only staying 1 night. Finally found 1 at the Microtel Hotel after almost giving up.
Pros: An excellent hotel. Room was spacious (2 Queens plus a long cushioned window seat). In room mini fridge, a safe & cable tv. Beds were large & comfortable. Everything was very clean. Towels big & fluffy, hair dryer provided as well. Staff was wonderful, very friendly, efficient & helpful. Pool was a great way to cool off. Vending & ice machine near elevator. Restaurants & shopping very close to hotel.
Cons: Biggest was summer price. We paid just over $200 for one night. I can see that at a luxury oceanfront hotel in peak season but not one so far from the water. Shower head delivered very little water (possibly a water saving method), could hardly rinse shampoo from my hair. Shower exhaust/vent is inefficient to handle steam so steamed mirror was a constant during showers. A free continental breakfast was provided & staff kept up well with keeping items supplied which included coffee, juices, cold cereal, prepackaged muffins & other breads even a make your own waffle machine. I'm sad to say that I didn't eat breakfast due to the crowd. It wasn't the hotels fault but I went downstairs twice trying to get a waffle but could hardly get close to the waffle maker. With only a few hours left before check-out & several things we wanted to do such as a quick trip to the beach itself, a last minute dip in the pool & a shower, we decided to skip breakfast.
In speaking with the manager at check-out we were told that the hotel franchise doesn't even provide a waffle maker, the manager kindly took it upon himself to provide one which was very nice & considerate of him.
Personally, I prefer to stay beachfront which is much more convenient. It's a very long walk (we always drove) from the hotel to the water or boardwalk.

Room Tip: If planning a visit, plan ahead & maybe get a good travel discount from a travel site.
