Days Inn Asheville West
Ranked #3 of 4 Hotels in Candler
Reviewed May 29, 2013

Booked for four nights, Memorial Day weekend, Fri-Tues. for a couples mini-vacation to the Asheville area.

Typical Days Inn, room was clean, bed was clean, no bedbugs, mattress was done though, needed to be replaced. Room interior was pretty beat up, light fixture brokem, etc. but everything was clean and worked.

Some things to note about this property: 1) The guest rooms are up on a hill above the office. This is the mountains. Everything is up or down a steep hill/drive/walk. If you are going to walk down for the complimentary breakfast/evening snack, be prepared for a hike or drive the car. Just something to note if you are older. 2) The sign for entrance to this property is sooo tiny, there is a KOA sign twice as big as the Days Inn sign right next to it, be prepared to turn in as soon as you see it. Hard to see property entrance because of overgrowth near entrance. 3) The wi-fi here is unusable, don't even bother. Impossible to log in and impossible to use it is so slow 4) This property is right off of I-40, in the middle of nothing really, there is a Dollar General across the street, a couple of gas stations at the exit and that is it. You are seven (7) miles to the next exit for any civilization if you need stores or a place to eat dinner

The front desk folks were friendly, spoke English (which is rare for a Days Inn) and where very accomodating when we cut our stay short two days because we found a B&B to try. The complimentary breakfast was pretty slim, cold cereal, juice, coffee, some kind of cooked egg thing, biscuits and thin gravy. Not Bob Evans, but hey, it was free. Never checked in for the evening fare, take your chances.

Would I stay here again? Probably. If I was looking for a clean place to crash for the night, fits the bill. Would I vacation here for a week? Hmm, doubt it, unless I had a bunch of kids that I needed to feed with the complimentary food bar.

If you just need a place to sleep, it's a good option. Rooms are clean. We didn't eat breakfast there as we were in the area for family. But they also had soup for the guests in the evening...nice touch.

We had our two small dogs with us...hotel is pet friendly.

One thing, no elevator so if you need access to one, stay on the first floor.

Room Tip: No elevator.

I stayed here Memorial Day weekend and used a hotel coupon book, got a single, two double beds, for $55. I feel bad saying anything negative whatsoever about the hotel, as everyone there without exception was super super nice! They do the best they can with what they have to work with --- a budget hotel out in the middle of nowhere ("the middle of nowhere" is not always a bad thing), but Asheville is a 10-minute drive away. My one major negative is that you have to use a 14-step stairway to get to the rooms on the back side (all they had left by the time I got there). Carrying luggage up and down (especially down) was not the greatest experience. The meals were very simple (chili and crackers for supper, eggs, gravy and biscuits for breakfast) and saved the necessity and cost of going out to eat. I only saw one other restaurant at a nearby truck stop, it looked nice, but if you're on a budget, just eat at the hotel. There is a Dollar General across the street (the whole hotel is on a fairly steep hill) if you need any toiletries, snacks, etc. There is also a flea market across the road but it is only open Saturdays and Sundays. As for the room itself, it was clean, the bed was soft and comfortable, AC worked fine, and the shower was adequate (but watch turning on the hot water --- it is HOT and doesn't take much of a flow). The TV was basic cable but I don't watch much TV so that wasn't an issue for me. The wi-fi was flawless (I watched YouTube instead without a hitch). This is a decent little hotel, but get a room on the front side, first floor, if you can. Thanks for a nice stay!

The room was very comfortable and clean and the staff very friendly. We were disappointed that the breakfast was only biscuits and gravy and some dry cereal as my husband likes none of that but that was a small thing. We found it in the hotel coupon books you get along the highway, so we felt we were taking a chance. It was a good one.

Motel is close to Biltmore Estate, Carl Sandburg's home and Thomas Wolfe's home in Asheville, so we stayed 4 nights while visiting these and other places.
The staff was very friendly and helpful, the room was clean, bright and very comfortable.
Breakfasts had good variety along with biscuits & gravy and a soup supper was provided each evening until 8PM. The price was right and the service was outstanding. We will stay here anytime we are near Asheville.

I am sorry to hear that your stay with us was not satisfactory. We have as many handicapped parking spaces as the number of accessible rooms at the property and our accessible rooms are all ADA compliant with the wide doors, elevated toilets, bars in the bathroom and a tub chair available on request. We do not have walk-in showers at this time, but we plan to install them the next time we renovate. Sincerely, Manager, Days Inn Asheville West
