Booked a golf outing with "the boys" at Crow Creek Condos/golf course. 5th year returning to golf at Myrtle Beach. Had previously stayed at the Legends Resort in Myrtle. 3 bedroom Crow Creek condos were nicer than expected, and highly recommended for 4 guys...do you really want 2 bedroom condos for 4 snoring guys? Rooms seemed reasonably new. Flat Screen TV. Roomy. No other amenities at Crow Creek beyond the condo. The course was separate. I'll discuss the courses we played below.
Crow Creek: At the condo complex. We paid $65/75-$10 coupon including cart. I thought it was a basic golf course through a condo complex. Not very memorable, and although the course was in OK shape the layout was very average. Other reviewers called it a good warm-up course. I would agree, for $45.
Panthers Run: For a course with "no surcharge", it was much better than expected. The rough was not short, and the fairways were shaped and surprisingly hilly. The average golfer would find this course a great value.
Thistle: Played this as an afternoon replay from Panthers Run. Thistle had a very upscale feel with 27 holes and a cool (16th century feel) clubhouse. Many of the fairways were separated by man-made mounds. It was links style. We paid $60, which was a much better value than the $65 we paid at Crow Creek.
Tigers Eye - 3rd time we have played. Very upscale. Not super tough. Lots of attractive landscaping. Almost no course side houses. Not quite Tidewater or Caledonia upscale, but very nice. Surcharge was worth it.
Leopards Chase - Even more upscale than Tigers Eye. No clubhouse yet, and no houses yet either. Many sand waste bunkers. Much tougher than Tigers Eye. Forced carries on the back 9. Beautiful course, all in all. Very nice condition.
Pearl West - Played after Leopards Chase in the PM as a "replay" for $53. Greens just aerated in mid-Sept. Sand kicked up on every shot to the green, making putting feel like putting in a cat box. Too bad, as the older style layout was nice. Longer course. Newer courses have shortened holes to speed play (have you noticed???). Pearl still had 560 yard par 5s and 190 par 3s from the whites. The back nine was nicer than the front with some holes along the intracoastal waterway. A nice "no surcharge" Myrtle course.
Lions Paw - Another decent "no surcharge" (aka not upscale, but nice) course. Some houses along the fairways. Older style with longer holes from the whites like Pearl West (550 Par 5s, 180 Par 3s). Was windy the day I played and the course played tough.
