My fiancé and I chose Mt. Mitchell as one of two stops on the Blue Ridge parkway for a day trip. Once arriving to the park we entered the interpretive center which was full of information and very well kept. Then, we walked up to the summits observation tower where you are in the clouds and the view is spectacular! We didn't have time to complete many trails but trails of varying difficulty and other activities are available. After spending some time on the observation tower, we enjoyed a picnic lunch at the parks picnic area which was very serene and offered amazing views and tranquility.

You drive till almost the top, there is a beautiful little trail to a nice looking tower overlook...benches and all...There is a snack shop, bathroom facility, and gift shop at the top parking lot...a restaurant a little further down...It is a stop worth making and its off the gorgeous Blue Ridge Parkway which in itself is a ride worth taking

I camped here with my son and a friend in July 2013. The views are breathtaking and the sites are nicely spaced apart. You have to park in a parking lot but it’s a short walk. The nearest store is a 45 minute drive so be sure to come prepared. You can buy ice and the Mt. Mitchell restaurant. The campground is located off some great trails. I wish that they provided showers and didn’t enforce the alcohol rule but it’s still one of my favorite places to camp. Be sure to pu t your food away or the bears will visit you at night.

On a recent trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway my husband and I stopped at Mount Mitchell State Park to hike the Old Mitchell trail to the summit. The Old Mitchell trail begins at the park office and makes its way through the forest, past the park restaurant, then through an open area with lots of blackberry bushes (unfortunately the blackberries had not come in). The trail continues to climb, sometimes quite steeply, passing the spur trail to Camp Alice, and finally joining the paved walkway to the summit of Mount Mitchell. The area at the summit has been developed and offers some nice amenities, as well as a wonderful viewing platform. The day of our hike was a beautiful, clear day with wonderful views from the summit.
When we began our hike back to the park office we followed the Old Mitchell trail to the junction with the spur trail to Camp Alice, where we hiked the steep descent to the remnants of Camp Alice. We enjoyed the cool water of Lower Creek when we reached the junction of the Camp Alice spur trail with the Commissary Trail. We spent some time exploring the Camp Alice area and then headed back to the park office on the Commissary Trail.
We really enjoyed our time at Mount Mitchell State Park and our hike on the Old Mitchell trail.

Its a wonderful drive , truly breath taking scenery for miles and miles. So this destination suits everyone regardless of your fitness. But for the reasonably fit then the hike from Mount Mitchell to Mount Craig and Big Tom is brilliant, the views are fantastic and the hike is fun. For the fitter , than hike further to Deer Gap. We got past Balsam Peak and had to turn back due to time and tiredness. Mount Mitchell should definitely be on your bucket list ! Gorgeous place and all for free ! GO !!
