It was raining pretty hard, but you make the best of it. The train left Bryson City at 10:30 and stopped at the Nantahala Outdoor Center about 1:00 for an hour. Due to the rain, we got out, let the grandkids touch the water, then watched a man in a kayak in the rapids for a few minutes. Because it was April 4th, only one store was open, looked around it, then got back on the train.

The train ride was good, pretty scenery including Fontana Lake, lots of waterfalls along the way. We were in the Southland (Crown car), so the ride was a little more comfortable. The staff was helpful, loved the entertainment by the banjo and mandolin players.

The number of trains on display, vintage and newer, is awesome. You have to look at the displays several times to see them all. One activity is a list of things to check off on the large setup in the back. We found people fishing, hobos beside a fire, merry-go-round, etc. There are so many items on the list you might run out of time! Another setup in the front part allows the children (and adults) to press buttons to see things operate. Admission is free with the train ride tickets.

At $50+ you dont get very much for your money. There issome nice scenery and good views of Fontana Lake but I think it is truely worth about half the ticket price.

The trains are in good condition and a credit to the people that maintain them.

We had a family reunion a few years back and one thing that was on the list was the train ride. Half of my family members were not full of joy over this event. Train was late, and my Dad got cut going between cabs.

The ride takes you through some beautiful views of the mountains and the river. We sat in the coach class and felt that it was all we needed. The windows opened for fresh mountain air and the price was way more reasonable than the higher classes. The conductors car sold snacks and drinks. Overall, a great time.
