“Great Family Trip”

PaddleFish Kayaking - Private Day Trips
Reviewed June 25, 2012

This was a great family outing. It is difficult to pull our two teenagers away from their electronics but we managed to do it and they enjoyed every minute. We took the twilight kayaking tour, the cool air rolled in but the water was warm. We were given a quick lesson by our guide Ryan and then we were own our way. Ryan did not expect us to know much and was very helpful and patient. We saw two Bald-headed Eagles which was a thrill. Although the trip was structured we were able to paddle freely and really enjoy the scenery and the lake. It was a little hard on the wallet but everything was taken care of. It was well worth it and the enjoyment the entire family got was priceless.

Great family adventure for all ages 5+. Having 2 teenagers it is difficult to find entertainment off the computer. Well...... we found it, we took the twilight tour the hot day had turned cool but the water was warm. We saw two wild American Bald Eagles, a young man named Ryan as a tour guide he didn't expect us to know much but he did a very good job of informing us. He unloaded the boats, gave us a short lesson and off we were. It was a tour but it was very loosely directed, giving us the freedom to enjoy and explore the lake. It was a little expensive but in retrospect it was worth it. I would recommend it for everyone.

Met our guide Joe at their shop in Bryson City (right next to the Nantahala Brewing Company on Depot Street). After signing in we followed him to a landing about 2 miles from town. There wasn't a soul in sight and we had our small section of the lake all to our selves. He explained the history of the park's creation and about the Trail of Tears (who knew it started not far from Bryson?). On the way back, two adult bald eagles appeared and Joe pointed out their nest and explained why it was in a great spot close to the beginning of the lake where the river pours into Fontana Lake. The river's shallow waters are full of fish and it's easier for them to catch. The views were spectacular throughout the trip and our youngest (five year old son) was able to go since there aren't any age restrictions for this trip.

Pete is friendly and helpful, and enjoys sharing his considerable knowledge of the lake and surroundings. After a 25 minute trip by car from Bryson City into The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Pete spent a few minutes getting each of us (none had ever been in a kayak) geared up and comfortably paddling. His commentary made the time fly, and the fall colors surrounding the peaceful lake were magnificent. The 3 hour kayak tour covered a circuit around islands so the scenery was always changing - enjoyable from start to finish!
