My wife and I stayed for a weekend here last month. We had a Groupon for a fireplace cabin or lodge room. We selected the fireplace cabin. We checked in without a problem. Then the fireplace went out, the pilot would not relight and there was a gas smell in the room. We were going out to explore the town and we told the front desk about it. We were told that happens when the unit is low on gas and that there should be a gas truck filling the tank.

After a few hours we returned to find the gas smell had gotten worse. Called the front desk and spoke to another person, she said the gas company was supposed to be there Friday but they didn't make it and wouldn't be able to fill the tank until Monday. They offered to move us into a lodge room and give us a discount at the restaurant. We really didn't have a choice so we moved into the lodge room.

Lodge room had 2 beds, no refrigerator, hot tub, or fireplace. We were placed between two families with young kids who kept running between the rooms, The discount for the restaurant was 25%, not really worth it, we ate offsite,

My wife and I really enjoyed Bryson City, If we return, we will not stay here again.

We apologize again for the problem with the fireplace. The fireplace suites are unique because they offer both indoor and outdoor fireplaces and a hot tub. It's challenging to move people from these units into a Lodge Room without those amenities.

The place looks nice overall. We were about the first ones there to check in. We stayed in one of the fireplace suites. We did notice that there was some kind of candy on the walls that has trickled down. The walls are not thick and the first night we could hear people coming and going all night. Also the fireplace inside the suite did not work. We went up to tell the lady at the front desk and she was like yeah we know that, maybe we should have told you at check in. But she did give us some ice. The next night the hot tub was not even hot. Maybe warm tub, but we could not stay in it long at all until we were freezing. It would have been a great experience, I believe, if we had the fireplace and hot tub working (which is the reason for getting that room).

Yes, we were having some difficulty with the indoor fireplace while you were here, which has since been repaired. Did you bring the hot tub issue to our attention? Maybe next time you come you would enjoy a small cabin for more privacy.

Spent two nights in tree-house cabin 42. Strangely, this review is right above another for the same cabin. I agree with management, tree-house (key word tree). The cabin was basic but perfect for my wife, 3-year-old, and I. Clean, no weird smell, and comfortable. Can't beat the price and quiet location. We had plenty of wood (thanks to the previous guest for asking) so we got a nice fire going, ate Jiffy Pop, and watched cartoons. Fun two night stay.

So glad you enjoyed your stay in Cabin #42. That's exactly the kind of experience we hope our guests have.

I was looking forward to taking my wife for a relaxing weekend in the mountains, cozying up to a fire, enjoying some wine and some reading and whatever else. Sadly, the reality of the experience was completely opposite of the expectation.

The good: the cabin (#42) was reasonably clean. No bugs.

The bad: just about everything else.

After a bit of confusion at the front desk over whether it was ready, we got our keys and headed to our cabin. Ugh, no view of anything except for trees and the side of a hill. Ok, no worries -- we can hunker down by the fire. Except there was no wood and when I went back to the front desk to ask for some (as instructed by the paperwork) I found out they were “out of wood” for the fireplace. Huh?? In fairness, when I complained enough someone tracked some down (much appreciated, btw).

On the inside the cabin was cold, uninviting, and the absolute furthest thing from cozy imaginable. The main room was a narrow rectangle with pine-looking wood of the same color on all walls, the floor, and the ceiling. Seriously, it was like being inside a pine coffin! No rug on the floor, a crappy/fuzzy tv, and it smelled like wet ash. The beds were uncomfortable and the backup blankets in the closet looked like civil war surplus. So we couldn't sit on the porch and enjoy the view (there wasn't one) and hanging out in the cabin was totally ungratifying. Two strikes.

For dinner we went to the restaurant (Village Bistro) since we had been finding some comfort in the nice wine we brought with us and didn't want to drive anywhere. Dinner was uninspiring if not awful. They were “out of lettuce and chicken because we had a wedding here that cleaned us out”, which didn’t set the tone for a great experience but the food was edible. Yummy? No.

We checked out a day early, just wanting to get home to someplace comfortable. I think a good indicator of the overall situation is this: when the desk clerk confirmed we were indeed leaving early (this is someone who we had not had any prior interaction with) she said “would you like to fill out a complaint form?” Apparently there have been a number of folks not too happy with their stay. When I chuckled at her response, she said "there's been quite a bit of that lately".

In reading other reviews and having some conversations with the staff -- who were always courteous and I made a point to be gentle with -- it sounds like the owners are desperately *trying* to make things better. Unfortunately my sense is that they have a long way to go and are cutting corners financially along the way.

Overall not recommended.

Room Tip: Know your cabin -- they range from what appear to be nice with nice views to terrible with no view.

I'm sorry your experience with us was disappointing. The Treehouse Cottages are aptly named because they are in the trees and do not have a view. They are simple and great for families on a budget.

Bistro restaurant was great, cabins not so much. Cabin was dirty, hot tub dirty and old old old. Bathroom door was put on backwards and almost imposable to get in. Furniture smelled bad and basic utensils were not provided. Eat at the Bistro and stay some where else.

Room Tip: Wait until the cabins are up graded and be sure to confirm hot tub is drained cleaned and refilled...

I'm sorry your stay with us was disappointing. Our Historic Cabins are indeed old and unique to the property. We are in the process of replacing furniture which will be complete before opening next season. Thank you for your compliments about the Village Bistro.

We just returned from a weekend stay (Oct. 18-20, 2013) in Fireplace Suite #17 which had a beautiful view of the meadow and the pond. We were very surprised upon that the room was as large as it was. It was very nice, clean and had everything we needed. It was especially nice to have a 12 cup coffee pot in the room. The deck with the fireplace and hot tub was well used. Very relaxing after a long day. On Saturday night we had dinner in the restaurant, which is lovely and has a beautiful mountain view. My husband and I both ordered the filet with mashed potatoes and asparagus, which was wonderful and cooked to perfection. Compliments to the chef. The bar was very friendly and also had a great atmosphere. One thing lacking was no type of breakfast was available on the property, however, the Nantahala Village is in a convenient location and only about 5 miles in one direction to NOC, Rivers End (for breakfast, lunch and dinner) and Big Wessers (for BBQ & Brew) or 8 miles in the other direction is Bryson City.

We hope to return in the Spring.

Thank you for your compliments; we are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. Because many businesses in our area cut back service in the latter part of the year, the Village Bistro has started serving breakfast for November and December. We hope you will return for another weekend retreat at Nantahala Village.

My husband and I were here for four days and it was a really great experience- beautiful cabin-employees were courteous and nice- the dining room -only open for dinner was great- as another reviewer said -best asparagus I've ever eaten and the shrimp and steak were to die for!! Only wish they served some sort of breakfeast and housekeeping needs some sort of re-organization-the housekeeping staff does not do the cabins-which we were not told when I booked the cabin- but we the cabin was done on our first day- but the bed was not really made up -just pulled the duvet over the sheets -no clean linen- towels were replenished-but tub and sink were not cleaned- Overall I would book again -but I think I'll wait until management has had time to fully bring this place back to it's former glory----

Thank you for the compliments. We do indeed have a great staff. You are correct, we do not provide daily housekeeping service to the cabins only to Lodge Rooms and Fireplace Suites. Cabins are refreshed every couple of days and towels replaced daily. Next time you come you may want to consider reserving a Lodge Room or Fireplace Suite in order to fully enjoy your vacation stay with us.
