We usually camp in state parks if at all possible--EXCEPT when it comes to Ash Grove! A friend recommended them so highly to us that we tried them out for the first time for a week-long stay during the summer of 2013 (a family trip, with our eight-year-old daughter). During that visit to Ash Grove we fell in love with this wonderful campground, the breathtaking mountains of Western North Carolina, and the town of Brevard. We stayed for another long week in June 2014 (a couples trip, with our daughter only there for three of our nine nights), and plan to go back every year when we take our daughter to summer camp.
We always get a drive-in 'Techno' site with water/electric/Wi-Fi for our pop-up camper, and these sites are top-notch! They are flat and even, easily large enough for the camper with the awning opened and an additional large shade/rain tent, and I love that the ground of each of these sites is lined with wood chips; it really reduces the mess we track into the camper. We have *never* had trouble getting around the campground, up and down the hills, or maneuvering into the site with our mid-size SUV pulling a camper (another reviewer mentioned this was a difficulty for them). A reviewer also mentioned it as a negative that these sites are up some steep hills and far away from the bathrooms; well, it's the mountains. The area is quite hilly, but it has never been difficult for us to get to and from the bathhouse (the bathrooms aren't any farther than your average campground). Worthy of note: even being pregnant and tired on this year's trip, getting around the hilly campground and back and forth to the bathroom was not an issue!
Ash Grove is extremely family friendly in our experience! Mr. Mark has taken our daughter on nature walks and taught her about the local wildlife, and she talks year-round about the things she learns from him, and the things she sees at Ash Grove. The playground has swings, a see-saw, and a horseshoe pit, and there are beautiful mountain walking trails all around the grounds, in addition to the paved roads--plenty to keep our nature girl busy exploring! Steven has always recommended perfect hiking trails for us in DuPont and Pisgah (even when I come to him with tons of stipulations and say 'I want a secluded, beautiful hike of 'x' difficulty and 'x' mileage, and here are the kinds of sights I want to see!), and as soon as you check in they are ready with recommendations for everything from great food to local adventures, all in handy pamphlets that they give you.
I can't speak highly enough about the hosts' attention to detail in making our stay at Ash Grove comfortable. They have firewood and various necessities available for purchase, and THE cleanest bathhouse I have encountered, period, complete with hair dryers and a scale. The laundry facilities are also clean with a nice folding counter, which is really useful for longer stays. Mark and Steven are always ready to chat, and happily give great advice and recommendations about the surrounding area. Any time we have sought them out needing assistance with something--from identifying local trees to borrowing a vacuum!--they are happy to help.
Mark and Steven have preserved the natural beauty of the area at Ash Grove and created a beautiful, relaxing and rejuvenating, secluded home-away-from-home for all who visit them. I can't say enough positive things about Ash Grove! I'm already looking forward to next year's trip. :)
