Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Brevard Music Center is, at once, a place, a summer institute, and a festival. The Music Center is situated on a wooded 180-acre campus in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. Founded in 1936, the Music Center has matured into one of this country's premier summer training programs and festivals. More than 400 gifted students, ages 14 through post-college, come to the Music Center to study with members of a distinguished artist faculty and with renowned guest artists. For seven weeks, students participate in a vigorous program of instruction that includes ensembles, private lessons, and chamber music. Brevard's hallmark is the powerful sense of community that re-emerges every June, as faculty and students work together to present more than 80 concerts to the public. The total audience each summer numbers more than 30,000. For decades the Brevard Music Center has inspired devotion not only among its students and faculty but also among its listeners and among a vast corps of volunteers. That hundreds of persons have purchased homes in western North Carolina expressly to be near the Brevard Music Center gives some measure of the Center's significance to its community.

“Garrison Keilor”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

What a great show! Garrison Keilor of Prairie Home Companion fame on NPR came to the Brevard Music Center and gave the show of shows! We'd seen him before at the Peace Center in Greenville and he did a great job there, but this show was really spectacular! The intermission was interesting as he was telling a story and walking up and down the aisles and that turned into a "sing along" with him. The Music Center is open air all around with a roof overhead. Such a wonderful venue especially on a nice cool late summer evening.

“music in the mountains”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

Although there was no performance on the day I visited this beautiful setting, I could feel the power of all the performances over the years just standing at the back of the amphitheater. I will plan to return someday when it's high season and all of the campers are taking the stage.

“The Best in Music Right Here in Brevard, North Carolina”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

Outstanding students, faculty, guest artists and conductors, comedians, etc., many of international reputation or who have won international competitions, perform classical, new age, and pop music, etc., here for seven weeks in the summer. This year Garrison Keillor (Prairie Home Companion), Joshua Bell, Conrad Tao, and Ji Yong, among others, performed at BMC. One of the best concerts this summer was that of the Brevard Concert Orchestra (all exceptionally talented high school students) which performed Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony under the baton of Keith Lockhart, Artistic Director of the BMC. Don't miss an opportunity to attend as many of these concerts as possible.
