“Easy to get to, worth the time”
Reviewed December 19, 2013

Not very large, but lots of species and the are well marked, which is a great help to the non-expert. We enjoyed our walk through here and have returned several times at different seasons.

“Lovely”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

Small and sweet....truly lovely, well-labeled flora.

There is a great little reconstructed Boone era cabin there.

“Looked like it needed some TLC”
Reviewed August 2, 2013

The entrance to the gardens was lovely-loads of flowers in bloom-and there was a cute little building with brochures. Once you got into the gardens proper (which a sign indicated were tended by volunteers), it looked as if they were in need of an influx of volunteer help. Six ft tall weeds were mixed in with the borders and many of the (native azalea especially) shrubs looked as if they needed severe pruning (mostly dead, straggly leafless trunks topped by a few weak leaves). A huge tree had fallen earlier in the week (city of Boone has to take care of removal we were told) so a part of the garden was closed off.
The restored log cabin (which had been moved to the site sometime in the 1960s from somewhere in the nearby hills) was interesting--hard to imagine a whole family living in such a small space. The fern garden looked quite healthy for the most part and the walks through that part of the garden were very pleasant.

“Free but Not a Must See”
Reviewed July 18, 2013

The gardens are located up the hill from Appalachian State. There is no charge to get into the gardens though they do ask for a $2 donation, which is why I gave the gardens an average versus a poor rating. Viewing the gardens takes about 10 minutes and was similar to my parent's yard. Not a must-do attraction by any means. If you want to walk around for a few minutes, it will do, but I was not impressed.
