Description: Proper is a Southern bistro-style restaurant located in downtown Boone NC. We offer carefully prepared fresh food in a comfortable and relaxed setting. Most everything we serve is made from scratch, in-house, and what we do not make ourselves is all natural and preservative free. All of our desserts are made in-house as well. Our best sellers are fried chicken, collard greens, and mac 'n' cheese, and chocolate pecan pie, but we have much more to offer. Come see us and find out for yourself.

Not many restaurants promising southern cooking can deliver a satisfying dining experience to a Downeast Yankee. Proper Restaurant does just that.

Although filled to capacity on a recent Friday night, we were seated promptly and were able to select from a varied menu. Food was well prepared and even the fried chicken was light and crisp on the outside, moist and tender on the inside. One of the real treats was the selection of microbrews from NC breweries. We'll be back.

Old house on Water Street right off the main drag. One of the clerks at The Mast General Store recommended it and we were not disappointed. The inside is bare bones, but the food makes up for the decor. Everything was made from scratch and that is what sets this place apart from the chain restaurants. The only problem with going later in the day is that they may not have your favorite dish. People stand in line for the turkey and dressing - which they had run out of by the time we got there. Parking in the area is an issue. The lots near Proper are reserved for other businesses and your car will be booted. Really good food at a reasonable price.

We went for Sunday brunch. I had biscuits and gravy with a side of 'sweet' bacon. The biscuits and gravy were good and the bacon was great. Sweeten with brown sugar it was just grand. Perfect.

My husband had the berry salad with goat cheese. The fruit was ripe and he raved about how good the goat's cheese was. This place only uses top quality food purchasing as much as they can fresh from local farms.

Desserts were solid. I had peach cobbler with ice cream. It was baked and served in individual servings. My husband had the key lime pie. It was tart. Just the way he likes it.

O husband said the coffee was full and rich. We enjoyed our brunch and will be back. I want to have the collards everyone raves about.

I have been to Proper on multiple occasions. Still coming back for more. Their menu consists mainly of healthy southern dishes. Awesome flavor. Right sized portions. Great selection. Creative desserts. Nice beer menu to go with the food. Outdoor seating, under shade trees, is relaxing and very quaint.

Proper serves up delicious southern staples like fried chicken (boneless breast), meatloaf, baked ziti (chock full of veggies), mac and cheese (shells with multiple cheeses), pan sauteed trout, turkey and dressing, butterbeans. They also have delicious inventive salads. Awesome desserts made in house. The price is right as well $7.95 for a main dish, two sides, and your choice of cornbread or biscuit. You can also get a plate of 3 or 4 sides around the same price. They have a great patio with beautiful plants, a porch and indoor seating. IT is a small place, go early if you have your heart set on one certain dish. If they run out there isn't any more, it is all made fresh that day.
