“Great Cabin, Amazing View!”
Reviewed October 25, 2015 for a stay in October 2015

My wife and I truly enjoyed our two-night mid-October stay in Palomar! The view is indeed amazing, as everyone else has written. In the distance you can see a short segment of U.S. route 421 about five miles away, and farther to the left of that view, the distant peaks are even farther away. The view can be enjoyed from the large deck, the screened porch, the sunroom, and the upstairs bedroom window seat.
The cabin was very clean when we arrived and the kitchen had everything we needed and more. The appliances seem relatively new and functioned well. I used the gas grill both evenings with no problems. The furniture was in good condition. The upstairs bedroom had a fairly firm bed, much better than other (non-Leatherwood) rentals in which we’ve stayed. The bathrooms are updated and very nice, especially the showers. The wood-burning fireplace is also a nice feature, and we did use it. The screened porch is where we ate our meals, and we would have appreciated it even more if it had rained during our stay. I’d love to hear rain falling on that metal roof, but I won’t complain about the three days of blue sky that we enjoyed.
Leatherwood is really in the middle of nowhere, which is part of its attraction and charm. It took us about an hour to drive from the Palomar to The Blowing Rock attraction via route 268 to 321. Not bad. From there we took the Blue Ridge Parkway west to Grandfather Mountain. We didn’t do any real hiking there, just the swinging bridge and the rocks beyond, then a picnic lunch, then the zoo and visitors center. Afterward, we browsed the shops in downtown Blowing Rock. The whole day trip, including driving time, was seven hours. That time includes several stops along the Blue Ridge Parkway for photos of the breathtaking autumn foliage colors.
The cabin is described as secluded, and, basically, it is. There is a large house only 500 feet away, but it can’t be seen through the trees. However, its residents do use the Palomar driveway. We saw them use it on horseback twice during our first evening. They came up the hill from the road and then turned onto their property at the peak of the driveway, about 150 feet from the house. Later that evening, after dark, and again the next evening, they came through that same spot with a pick-up truck and went down the Palomar driveway from there. It was a little spooky that first night hearing tires on the gravel and wondering who was there, until I realized that it was the neighbors.
The road, Elk Ridge road, is a paved road in good condition, but, of course, very curvy climbing/descending the mountain. It takes about ten minutes to drive three miles, and that’s part of the reason that it takes an hour to get to Blowing Rock.
Again, we loved our stay at Palomar/Leatherwood. The reservation/check-in/check-out was all very easy, and the staff was friendly. We will definitely stay here again if the opportunity arises!

“What a View!”
Reviewed July 7, 2015 for a stay in July 2015

Cabin was a delight. Incredible views from an extra special deck. A "rustic," private cabin but with fully updated kitchen and bathrooms. Really wanted for nothing. Owners provided just about everything one could want/need. Even binoculars! Be advised that this cabin is in the mountains and pretty secluded. Takes about 10 minutes just to drive down to resort entrance. Then lengthy trips through winding mountain roads to places like Boone and Blowing Rock. So plan accordingly for day trips. Also, buy a good state map. Don't rely on GPS!

Only thing that was a little weird was that the management company wanted us to carry our trash down the steep, winding mountain road to the dumpster. We paid a cleaning fee, so were a bit baffled by the requirement. After all, who wants to pile trash bags on top of their luggage in the trunk? We asked not to, and the manager said we could leave it.

For those looking for a gorgeous, secluded cabin with stunning views, you can't go wrong with Palomar!
