Really enjoyed this course last year, played it several times. Starter was so busy talking we could hardly get his attention. Then he wanted us to go off early as some members wanted to play. No score card in the cart, nothing on the second hole. Play was really slow, and the manager came by. They had a group of 6 playing slow two up. We let him know. A few min later the starter came buy and we told him the same, said that wasn't possible - accused us and the group in front we were lying. Wanted us to pair up with the group in front. They were playing from the whites, us from the tips. We did, that didn't speed anything up as we constantly had to wait for the guys mowing and watering the greens. Mowing the greens at 2:00pm? Meanwhile the members behind us were hitting into us like we were slowing them down. Round took 5 hours, most of that waiting. Plenty of courses around that want paying customers, not this one.

There are a lot of golf courses along the North and South Carolina coast but few are as fun to play as Carolina National. I recently hosted a party of 12 from Virginia and Tennessee who remarked that the fairways "are like hitting off carpet" and "the greens run absolutely true". The 27-hole course is nestled into a residential community but none of the fairways are crowded by houses. Two of the three "nines" have a signature par 3 that opens out onto the Lockwood Folly River and marshes which are beautiful year-round. Playing off the tips (black) is a real challenge to clear water and deep rough; definitely for single digit handicappers. For hackers in the 16-30 handicap range I'd recommend using the blue tees for an enjoyable round.
After golf, the Plantation Grille in the clubhouse has excellent staff and equally excellent lunch menu at a very reasonable price. My party raved about the Clubhouse Burger, Reuben sandwich and Chicken Quesadillas in particular.

This course has a wonderful layout with a wide variety of hole types.... with no two holes being even remotely the same. Very challenging from the back tees, but not too difficult for the higher handicapper playing from the front tees.

A large number of sand traps... A lot of water.... Tree lined fairways.... All making the course picturesque while making the course fun.

The only thing keeping this course from receiving 5 stars is that the greens were very slow... The slowest we have played in this area. Not sure if they had not cut the greens in a couple of days, or if they always keep them this slow.

A Fred Couples designed 27 hole golf course with great views and challenging pin placements. Suitable for all levels because of 5 sets of Tee placements for each hole. If you're a "hacker" like me (20+ handicap), plan to bring plenty of extra balls--this course has lots of water and deep roughs!

Played C.N. while on holiday on Sept 6,2011 - 50.00 each with free lunch and 27 holes what a beautiful course and layout. ! Great property and manicured to the enth degree.
We arrived at noon and due to possible thunderstorms from Katia approaching, we requested out tee time moved up from 3pm to 11:30 am. The staff were great and started us right away on the Heron Course. Windy and hot at 95 degrees we took our free lunch and lots of water and pop with us and had a great time !!! Highly recommend it to people who stay in Carolina Beach and North Myrtle as it is an easy drive to get to.
