This is one of those generic HIE that is stuck in the passage of time and does not believe in updating itself. The outdated building and rooms are obvious to any regular traveler. My room (307) was overlooking the back parking that also provided a wonderful view of the garbage dumpster. The girl at checkin could not even be bothered to stand up and greet me, leave alone recognize me as a Gold member. The 'free' breakfast of course is a joke at all HIE. Only the really ignorant ever eat that stuff. The mattress was too soft. There was no light at or near the desk to be able to do any work. And of course, HI chain does not believe in providing USB sockets.

Finally, Mr. Richard L., please do not bother to give a bland, generic response. If you are unable to address the specific comments of the guests, please do not bother.

I would not stay at this hotel again. My wife and I recently stayed at the hotel as part of a weekend sightseeing trip. The lobby carpet was not vacuumed at check-in. The next morning the exact same debris was in the exact same spots on the lobby carpet. The cafeteria was also sub-par. The food was not terrible, but the only fresh fruit was apples. The hotel did make decent eggs and turkey sausage, but my wife found a hair in her food (definitely not hers) the second morning. Most notably, the tables in the cafeteria were filthy. I heard one guest ask an employee if there were any napkins, to which the employee replied that the hotel was out. Not only was the hotel cafeteria out of napkins at 8:30 am on a Saturday, but no one seemed to care. No employees went to the local grocery store to buy more, and no employees came around with a wet rag to wipe off the (very) dirty tables. Even the entrance to get to the hotel is not good. The hotel sits in a hole with poorly-marked entrances. If you blink and miss the entrance, you have to make two U-turns to try again or else circle around the block behind the hotel. (That block is a residential neighborhood where you have to drive very slowly so it takes a while.)

The sole redeeming quality the hotel had was the bed. The sheets were clean and the mattress itself was comfortable. I know mattress comfort is subjective, so I would just say the mattress was on the softer side, but not overly soft where we would sink in and never escape.

This past Friday we walked into the hotel and saw at least 15 people standing in line to check in at 5pm. The front desk person(forgot his name) kept the flock moving along with a professional and level head despite a few hiccups and general grousing from the guests. Seems the other desk clerk had an unfortunate injury that morning and was unable to make it to work. This is October and prime leaf peeping season. 20 minutes later we enter to a clean room - nice touch was a small fridge and microwave for those late night leftovers. Morning breakfast was the usual breads, cereals, juices, yogurts, and a variety of omelets, eggs, and sausage gravy. Good enough to get the day started. King bed comfortable and there were KING SIZE PILLOWS in both firm and soft! The following morning was a little rough for the kitchen staff as they ran out of napkins and the pancake machine was out of order. Other than that, a solid place to lay your head after a long day on Grandfather Mt.'s Profile Trail. Not the Ritz Carlton but with every other place booked solid this was a good one. We did hear of one guest having to deal with an overbooking situation but apparently this was resolved.

Blowing Rock is a beautiful place but other than the resort, places to stay are often deceiving. Such is the story with the former Days Inn which is now the HIE. From the outside (cover) it looks pretty good. Even the lobby (first chapter) is okay.

The rooms, on the other hand, are just painted and papered over the 1970's bones. The lighting is poor, our fridge had no dial and was stuck on frozen. The beds were okay and the bathroom had new faucets but limited counter space and oooh, the toilet. It was like sitting on a "chamber pot" at my great-grandpa's place. Bad knees and you better get one of the few handicapped rooms.

Breakfast was okay but I wish they would have more space and closed that outside door, since it was under 50 degrees. Food got cold on the way to the table. And please, if you want to save a little get either the blue stuff or the yellow stuff and allow the pink stuff for us purists.

Now, for the pièce de résistance! Why would the room that was rented for a hundred bucks on Thursday night (and be like noted above) be worth more than twice as much on Friday night? I know...the rate must have increased since, all day long the second day we had the pleasure of walking along the halls smelling an stumbling over the piles of dirty towels and bed linens by the door of each room. That certainly added a lot of value to our stay.

Room Tip: Limited number of both king beds and handicapped rooms and check your fridge before using.

The quirk I speak of is for male guests only, due to a design flaw and poor placement of a marble shelf behind the toilet, you will have to sit or hold up the seat while taking a whiz. There was an electrical problem that caused all the outlets on one wall of the room to be out of use, in fairness they offered another room but they could have offered that option before we checked in. The hotel was clean and had good breakfast options. They were still trying to fix the electrical problem when we checked out but the sadly the little quirk I mentioned is permanent.

We utilize all comments for improvement of our product and services and will continue to work towards the highest standards for our guests.

While we understand that your stay was not 100% satisfactory, we would hope that you would give us another chance to make your stay as best as it can be
