My husband and I stopped by the delightful town of Black mountain on the way home from our stay in the Bryson City area. Just happened upon the Veranda Café for lunch. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. I ordered a sandwich prepared with shaved turkey, cranberry chutney and Swiss cheese with a cup of creamy potato soup. Everything was very tasty! My husband ordered a sandwich called the Cuban. He said it was very good. At least 6 types of homemade soups are offered for lunch and lots of sandwiches and desserts. We'll be returning!

Black Mountain is a delightful little town for browsing in the shops. The Veranda is my first choice for lunch. The service is friendly, the food is delicious, and the prices are reasonable. In fact, given the subtlety and nuances of the flavors, the prices are are better than reasonable. The Low Country Shrimp and Grits is delicious, with a richness of flavors that is surprising. This dish is as good as any you would get in Charleston. The Southern Caviar salad (black-eyed peas) and Indian Summer salad (green peas) are wonderful. The key lime pie is first rate, and saves you a trip to the Keys.
The Veranda is only open for lunch and closes a couple of months in early spring, so check their website if you are uncertain. While on the website, look at the menu, then hop in your car and head for Black Mountain. You won't be disappointed.

First time visitor. Good food, good service and average price. No complaints about anything other than there could be a bigger selection at lunch in my opinion.

An unassuming exterior, but very pleasant inside. (I ate on the veranda in the back.) I also had the Hungarian mushroom soup. Savory! Hearty, yet somehow still subtle in all the flavors present. The shrimp and grits was good and filling, although as a dish not meant to be subtle. Wait staff: Ashley in a paisley apron was especially competent, friendly, and fast. She made a point to bring my soup out before my main dish, which she did, but then the grits came not long after. That's not a complaint on my part, but rather shows that the kitchen is well managed. Another plus: the food was served appropriately warm as well. (Read another recent review of mine to hear about the restaurant that consistently gives poor service -- service is important to the overall experience!!) If you are in Asheville, take the jaunt down the road to visit Black Mountain, and then be sure to come here.
The only downside, and a "serious" one, is that this is a lunch place, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. I believe. Plan accordingly.

Happened upon this little gem walking around the town of Black Mountain. It was quaint, service was friendly and fast and the food was incredible. They are only open for breakfast and lunch and worth the trip.

I had the turkey, cranberry panini and it was perfect. My husband had the roast beef and he too, raved and raved. The side of Indian Summer salad was homemade and the best I've ever had.

Yep. It was yummy :)
