“more of a boarding house than a hotel but very nice”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 7, 2012

great place but much more a boarding house than hotel - eg no tvs no in room telephones.
Very charming, nice decor, and a slightly older clientele... which is all wonderful as long as you are aware of what you are getting.
Staff could not be more helpful

Room Tip: no elevator so if you cannot manage stairs you will need a ground floor room

and the friendly staff ran the place, i would have loved it.
its charming and clean----the whole interior has been remodeled, tastfully, very tastfully.
once its completed it will again be the gem it once was. the diner we had there was very tastfull, and pleasing to the eye----reccomended for sure.
Either stop trying to be a B&B, OR bring back the diner cook and staff to prepare breakfest. THEN YOU'L HAVE SOMETHING

The hotel was completely remodeled by the new owners and provides a local atmosphere with all the amenities one would expect at any modern big city hotel. Located in the town it is easy to enjoy the small town, and also to do hiking along many of the greenways that cross through town. The large open area in the lobby is a comfortable place to meet or just enjoy an evening cocktail, and the restaurant provides a great meal. Would highly recommend for parties or other activities that provide that local flare with caring owners.

We had such a wonderful stay, at the Monte Vista. We were with a wedding party, so the place was booked. Most of our activities were outside at other venues, but returning each night to the Monte Vista was so calming and relaxing. For anyone who will be visiting Black Mountain, we would highly recommend that you stay at this lovely and very charming hotel. The owners, Barney and Sue are truly two of the nicest owners we have ever met!

Thank You, Barney and Sue and to all the staff !

Room Tip: Second floor corner rooms, on the front are absolutely, fantastic!

Wow. What a neat place. My husband and I spent Labor Day weekend at the Monte Vista and a had fabulous time. The hotel is wonderful. We walked in the front doors to find an bright open lobby and bar with live music and awesome art...two of our favorite things. The decor is fresh and light and whole hotel is very welcoming. Our room was quite nice...very simple light (as opposed to heavy) furnishings, a quilt on the bed, nice bathroom...We loved that the owners chose to restore the inn yet not fill it with heavy period furniture ! A simple breakfast and coffee was set up early every morning in the restaurant...always a great touch ! And the restaurant...well that is another great thing..really really yummy Sunday night dinner...artfully presented and tasty served in a large open dining room filled with fabulous art ! The owners, staff and at least one of the hotel cats were all great...the other cat was aloof as cats can be. The location is perfect as you can walk downtown to shops, cafes, art, music, the town lake. We will be back.

The Monte Vista is a warm inviting Inn with great character. With the recent restoration, you can step back into the past yet still enjoy a clean, refreshed place to stay. When you arrive, you first notice the large open gathering area, local art work and Fitz's Tap Room (a nice little spot for a drink). We also had a great, reasonably priced meal at The Palate restaurant on site. The owners are very friendly and accommodating and have great tips to help you enjoy the area. The vibe is laid back. We liked taking the short walk (a few blocks) to check out the restaurants and shops of Black Mountain too. The location is only 15 minutes from downtown Asheville and 20 miles from Chimney Rock State Park. If you like microbrews, the Pisgah Brewery is also only 10 minutes away. All in all, a great jumping off point to explore the greater Asheville/WNC area.

We have stayed at this hotel a half dozen times in the last ten years and enjoyed it everytime. Since Sue and Barnie renovated it it has transformed into a delighful small town gem. The food is excellent and the new bar helps you to relax after a busy day in town. The staff is very accomadating and someone is always available for anything you need. Monte the hotel cat is so very sweet. We sat in the hall and played with her after she followed us to our room. It is in a prime location for shopping and dinning in Black Mountain and close to Lake Lure, Montreat and Asheville. It is the only place for me spend the night in Black Mountain...

Room Tip: Rooms on the front of the hotel offer a wonderful view and the corner rooms are a bit larger and bri...
