The food is worth the drive....from anywhere. Interesting menu which never disappoints. Our group had the fresh corn which was served as an appetizer and it was fabulous. Never have I tasted corn that good. I look forward to returning soon. The food is well priced for the outstanding quality. The service was very friendly but a bit disorganized. I look forward to returning.

Belhaven, NC is well known to intercoastal waterway boaters, but you may have missed it if you are not from coastal North Carolina. However, if you are a foodie, you need to point your radar that way and zoom in on one of the finest dining experiences in North Carolina!

Spoon River is a new farm to table restaurant with direct farm connections as well as being right next to the Pungo River and other coastal fisheries. They strive to have 80% of their menu from local sources. Set in a renovated 100 year old mercantile building, the ambiance is open and airy, with press tin ceilings and old cabinets reminding one of the past. Adjacent to the dining area is a surprising large and deep wine collection from which you may choose a bottle for your table (a wine list is also available) or to take with you. Bar service is also offered.

At our table we had appetizers of fresh corn on the cob with herbed butter and steamed mussels in a broth that was a dish by itself. Entrees were a fresh local tuna sashimi, a beautiful local filet mignon, and fresh mahi wrapped around a crabmeat filling and steamed. The dishes were filling and elegantly presented. Our table happily found room to split a rich and delicious mocha latte cake.

On my third visit from Raleigh to Spoon River I polished off my avocado sandwich on the most perfect crunchy outside, soft inside toasted bread, the OMG jumbo corkscrew pesto-y pasta salad and insanely delicious and cooly refreshing cauldron of red sangria, then walked down the block to the real estate agency and rented a house down the street.

I think I like this restaurant a lot!! Owner, Teresa and Chef Jeremy are the icing on the strawberry tiramisu. Come see and taste for yourself! Maybe you won't sign a lease in this charming, friendly small waterfront town, but I bet you will want to come back and eat at Spoon River again.
