“Good Times and lots to do”

The Buckeye Recreational Center
Reviewed July 12, 2014 via mobile

There are several things to do here. We did not use the in door activities but we did rent the canoes and hiked Falls Trail. Canoeing is $5 per person regardless of age. They did not have enough life preservers for our entire party which was odd but being from Fl we are strong swimmers and the lake is fairly small (3 acres). They only have 2 canoes to rent. We were given fishing poles but didn't catch anything. Fishing was fun and gave us something to do while we were there. You can paddle across the lake to an "island" and fish from there. You can also access it by car by driving on the road past the boat ramp. There is a small waterfall and a fun creek but swimming is not allowed. Not sure if it is enforced as the summer camp kids were playing in it. There is also a large fire pit with seating that anyone can use. Wood is provided but u have to inform the police that u r using it. We got rained out one day and they gave us a rain check but would not refund us even though we barely used the canoe. We came back the next day to use the rain check but the canoes weren't available, so half of us came back a 3rd time but the other half couldn't. There is suppose to be a time limit but it doesn't seem to be enforced.

There is a really great hike called Falls Trail there too. The trail is a loop and is easy. It has a really nice waterfall about 3/4ths of the way that you can swim in. Water is cold but hey that's the mountains. Past the falls the trail becomes very easy. Blackberries grow along the edge and we saw clear evidence of bear in the area. There are several pools along the creek for swimming. The end of the trail leads u to Buckeye Lake. We hiked with 4 adults, a 14yr old, a 5yr old, and a 3yr old.

It also has a nice kids rope course outside. Tennis courts plus many indoor activities. Also has nice bathrooms.

We have visited here in the summer and the winter. We have done the Falls Trail in both seasons.

Overall it's a great place to explore and spend the day.

Has weight room, in-door basketball court and in-door tennis court. Outside area has walking trails and nice playground area for the children. Although I didn't canoe and fish, they do offer these activities as well. For those looking for some exercise, this would be a nice place to start. At the time of the review, the cost was $30 / family for the week. They do offer season passes as well.

The Rec center is an awesome facility for any season. In the winter, you can go inside to play tennis, volleyball, basketball, etc. There is a playroom indoors for kids (with toys and padded areas for gymnastics) and there are fitness classes and a workout gym for adults! So it's a nice escape from the snow! In the summer, use the inside, but also venture outdoors, because there is a great walking/jogging trail if you are looking for flat terrain, outdoor fields for playing any kind of games, an EXCELLENT playground that is very unique and the best part....a beautiful hiking trail to a waterfall that leaves from their facility (look for the arbor near the playground).

They also host a lot of activities year around so check their schedule. You can even check out equipment, fishing poles, etc. to use while in Beech Mtn or at the rec center. And if nothing else, it is staffed by friendly locals that can tell you all the best places to go while there!! There is a nice little lounge area when you come in (fireplace operating in the winter!) where you can read, play board games, use the Internet, etc. They also have ping pong, air hockey and just too much more to name. We have a small child and teenagers in our family and everyone has fun when we go there.

We literally make it our first stop every time we come to Beech Mtn so that we can have fun and also find out what is going on in the area. Outdoor areas are free and the indoor activity areas have a small fee if you aren't a member. Very worth it!!!
