Owner description: North Carolina's third oldest town, Beaufort lies on the coast bordering the southern tip of the Outer Banks. Originally a fishing village and port of safety dating from the late 1600's, Beaufort has been visited by patriots, privateers, merchants, and skilled craftsmen who built Bahamian and West Indian style homes and public buildings. On the Beaufort Historic Site, you can take advantage of the six professionally restored buildings, tour the Old Burying Grounds, and take a tour aboard a vintage English Double Decker Bus. Beaufort, NC truly is where history meets the sea.

Beaufort is a quaint town full of historical homes and the waterfront is beautiful. Great restaurants and shops right on main street.

This is a mus see when in Beaufort. While there, visit the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery. This is a great place to start your visit in Beaufort. There are many wonderful things to see and do in Beaufort, the Coolest Small Town in America (2012)

Our walking tour took about 1.5 hours because we were relentless with the questions and our tour guide, Robyn, had all the answers (and we were the only tourists)! As the tour goes through the different homes and public buildings, one is able to relate current lifestyles to different time periods and backgrounds. The tour is located in a small downtown area, easy to walk. There are steep stairs in 3 of the buildings and the heating/cooling is minimal-none, so dress appropriately. They were remodeling the visitor center where tickets are purchased so I am unable to comment about those facilities. I saw no food for purchase onsite but the Cru Coffee House next door is excellent.

The tiny community of Beaufort is steeped in history and this is the place to check it out. Start at the Beaufort Historic Site and end the visit by walking on the boardwalk in this tiny town. It is definately worth the trip. See free roaming horses right across the water.

I love visiting Beaufort; it's where I generally take family when they come to visit. The Historic site is compromised of four or five buildings. One of them is used for an art gallery and the rest have been locked up both times we visited. There is an old stocks in the park that is great for a photo op, but that's about it. In the summer there are often little arts and crafts markets in the park. If you're going to visit Beaufort, which you should, it's worth stopping by, but you're not likely to spend more than 30 minutes there, 60 if you stop by the gallery.
