There you will be introduced to the Wild Horses of Shackleford Banks. This free roaming herd is believed to have descended from Horses that were brought here roughly 500 years ago, and still survive as one of the last isolated groups of wild horses in the US. You will help your guide track the horses and see first hand the fascinating behavior of horses in the wild, a rare experience with nature that you'll never forget.Bring your camera for pictures that will forever remind you of this amazing place and its fascinating inhabitants. Stay on the island for the length of the tour, or stay all day! Same price! Ferry tickets included in the price of your admission.

We stayed at the Seahawk Inns and Villas in Atlantic Beach....One day we went to Beaufort which is a beautiful town...We took the "Island Ferry" for $10 a round trip over to Shackleford Banks.....Well worth it....You could go over and stay as long as you wanted and the ferry would come back and get you at the time you specified....Crystal clear bay on one side of the dunes....beautiful ocean on the other side....Excellent shelling as you can see by the pictures I post...The horses are beautiful...a dream come true for me...

“What an amazing island!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2013

We just got back from our first trip to Shackleford and we are already planning our next! We took the short ferry ride over on a very busy Memorial day weekend. We were somewhat surprised to see the quantity of boats at this "uninhabited" island. Despite the quantity of people here we had no problems finding a spot on the magnificent sandy beach. We arrived a few hours before low tide and thought we would have problems finding any decent shells with that many people searching as we were. We were amazed to find more quality shells there in three hours than we have ever found on any beach we have ever been on! We got several nice sized conch shells a sand dollar, a few spirals and one awesome Queen's helmet!
While taking a break from shelling we tracked down the wild horses. We didn't have to look far before we found a group of 5 horses. They are very use to humans being around and didn't seem to be bothered by us at all! Very cool that they have been on this island living wild for over 400 years!
There are no bathrooms (except the natural kind) on the island and no places to get fresh water or other drinks, so plan accordingly. They allow camping on the island and we did see several people enjoying that. Be careful of ticks, I found 4 on me in only the three hour visit we had to the island but you wouldn't have to worry about that if you stuck to the beach. The only way on to the island is by boat or by one of the local ferries.
Despite all the people that were there this weekend we did not feel cramped at all and we had an awesome time! Definite must see!

“Best part of my trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2013

I can see why its called the local favorite spot. Took the Outer Bank Ferry out to the Island mainly to see the wild horses. At $15 per adult person was well worth it. Was dropped off on the west end of the island were we headed to the interior to find the horses. We spotted a group about 15 minutes in by the shore of the Atlantic Ocean side. After observing the horses we walked the beach OMG the large shells we found were awesome. We heard that the shelling was fantastic and it was. We wanted to go back on our last day but the weather wouldn't let us. Its a must see and do if your there, I recommend doing it at the beginning of your vacation so you have time to go back again to this enjoyable island.

“Wish we had stayed longer!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2013

We enjoyed this tour so much! You have the option of staying as long as you wanted and we opted to stay about 3 hours...you can call to stay longer if you would like, but three hours in the sun was about all that we dared to stay!...The shelling was GREAT!..I found three sand dollars and was so excited!...but found other neat shells as well. We walked around the island and found about 10 of the wild horses which was neat...it is amazing that they survive on the island..would highly recommend this for families!

“Wild Horses !!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2013

An EXCEPTIONAL experience! A short 15 min ferry ride to this island with an option of 2 or 4 hrs to stay and explore. LOTS of shells (bring a bag to collect). Found the horses after walking 1 hr---well worth it. We counted 10 with a young one (born in Dec. 2012). What a treat. A beautiful day--clear, mild breeze for Feb. Apparently "a calm before a storm" which happened the next evening. Bring water & food to make this enjoyable. And, of course, a camera. You won't be disappointed. The views are spectacular, especially climbing a sand dune to get a panoramic view. Please remember to pack out any trash--cans/bottles/paper/plastic, as there are no trash receptacles.
