Steve zoomed us over to Shackleford Banks and gave a good historic overview on the way. Pulled up right onto the sand beach and clued us into getting to a high dune to spot the wild horses. There they were. Actually just yards away from our drop off spot. You can explore the island at your leisure and climb the dunes, hunt shells and hang with the equines as long as you want. In other outer bank reserves you cannot roam the dunes and god forbid you look at a horse. Idea: take along a bag and help pick up liter—there's too much of it from previous visitors.

This is a must if you are vacationing in the area. Boat ride was a nice way to see the Beaufort waterfront and spend as much time as you want on Shackleford. The ferry drops you off and returns on the hour . Stay for an hour or all day. My wife and I stayed for 3 hours and found some nice shells. Didn't see the horses, but the captain, after picking us up, went farther down the island and pointed them out on the dunes. On our way back, he gave us a history lesson of the homes on the Beaufort waterfront.

We took the ferry out to Shackleford Banks. Our guides shared local information with us and told us the best places to go to see the horses. They dropped us off, we could stay as long as we wanted and then they come back to get you. We stayed two hours, which was enough for shelling and to see the horses. I would stay 3 if you would like to relax a little too or if you have small children so you aren't rushed. It was a nice way to spend our morning.

The surf and turf cruise was just the right length when your days are already packed with things to do. We were in the boat for about an hour, and on land on Shackelford Banks for 30 minutes to do some shell hunting. Captain Patrick was nice and had a lot of information to share. The next time we go to Beaufort, we want to do the regular ferry service to Shackleford so we can spend the day there, but for this trip the surf and turf was just right.

Gotta gotta go. The captain was great - no anti-tourist comments - perfect excursion. Take the family, take a picnic (oops we didnt) Go see shackleford for the day. Camera and bag to hold amazing shells required
