Be sure to get the guide from the Visitor Center (it's $1) but it tells you about a lot of the people burried there.

I happen to enjoy old cemetery sites & did a walk through yesterday. There is a guide ($1 available at the History Visitor Center around the corner) that explains the 26 numbered headstones. Be sure to visit the little girl's headstone that children in the area have placed little trinkets, shells, dolls, etc. on the grave for years (their "adopted" sister?). Azaleas were in full bloom so that added to the atmosphere of somber beauty.

I did the walking tour on my own. I pick up a pamphlet from the Beaufort Historic Center at 150 Turner Street that lists a number of grave sites with a brief story about the decease. Very interesting. I spent about 1/2 hr there. There is a paying tour you can take, but, it didn't fit into our schedules. l

I usually don't spend time in grave yards but I have to say this one was very interesting. It have head stones that I saw dating back into the early 1800's. It is open to the public with no admission cost. It would be a pretty spooky place after dark with all the low growing trees and vines. It looks just like the pictures show. Some folks had guided tours but we just wandered through. A different way to spend an hour or so.
