Owner description: The Jungle Place is a licensed sanctuary for the endangered Spider Monkey. They rescue and rehabilitate orphaned monkeys who were victims of the illegal pet trade, poaching, habitat destruction and exploitation. All too often these beautiful, highly intelligent primates become victims when humans and nature collide in a natural paradise like The Riviera Maya. The in-person tours they offer to help support the sanctuary are the very definition of sustainable and ecologically responsible tourism. The owners, Heidi and Joel, are a wonderful couple who originally moved to the area to retire but instead devoted their lives to care for these rescued monkeys. They provide them with an incredible amount of love, individual attention, medical care and specialized diets, all within a beautiful and meticulously well-kept habitat right in their native jungle.Visit in-person to meet the owners and the monkeys, view the facilities and habitat, and see first-hand the level of care that your donation helps provide. Be sure to reserve your tour well in advance, as they allow only a very limited number of visits per week.

Thank you Heidi & Joel for fitting us in on short notice...I took 5 kids (8, 10, 11, 15 & 17) we all enjoyed a fantastic experience with your family of spider monkeys. Such a relaxed and comfortable environment for everyone involved. I will definitely visit again when I'm in the area. It was an experience I'm thankful my children and nieces could enjoy and one you cannot get at the typical "excursions" in Mexico! (After a lot of thought I choose the Jungle Place over dolphins and do not regret it) <3

Thank you Heidi and Joel for showing such warmth and hospitality to our family today and giving us an experience of a lifetime. Your love for these animals is so apparent and inspiring.
Super, super, SUPER cool visit! Keep up the great work : )
Just when we thought we had done everything there was to do in the Riviera Maya, we found out about you...and had an AMAZING time!

Went to the jungle on friday the 13! WOW! It restores hope for us animal lovers to see first hand that there are still people like this in the world. I saw Joel patiently giving an injured monkey his medicine, bottle feeding another who just wanted to swing! Its not a structured touristy tour at all-it feels more like hangin (pun intended) with friends on their deck. Friends who just happen to care for 64 monkeys. The habitat they've set up to enrich these monkeys lives is fantastic-designed to keep their minds active as well as their bodies and to let them be monkeys not pets. When we got in with the monkeys, Heidi and Joel took great pains to ensure everyone had a good experience, they took pix with everyones cameras and even fetched iphones, etc. out of bags when cameras choked. Then provided cards for all to share pix via e-mail, and Heidi was very educational to all,
Especially the children about not supporting "tourism monkeys". They were even arranging to rescue another monkey when I was there. This is the kind of excoursion you can feel good about, you are helping to keep these amazing creatures well cared for. The babies are so great to watch, they never stop! If you are in the area this is worth the trip-the road itself is an adventure tbrough the jungle not to be missed and you are contributing to a fantastic cause. Thank you Joel and Heidi for an amazing experience. Hasta proxima!

Again we had the good fortune of visiting Heidi and Joel and the monkeys on our latest trip to Playa. I can't believe how much the place has grown since our first visit. When we first went there were about 24 monkeys and now it's up to over 60. This increases the work load for Heidi and Joel but it's so obvious how much they love their "family". There were four babies when we were there and they had a separate nursery area for them and they were so much fun to watch. This is always the highlight of our vacation and I will definitely be looking forward to another visit. I just wish this attraction was listed under the Playa del Carmen forum like it was in the past because I'm afraid that people will miss it because now it's listed under Chemuyil which most people have never heard of. Please go and help support this very worthwhile sanctuary. Heidi and Joel and the monkeys will be forever greatful.

Went to the Jungle Place today - one of the best days ever! Heidi was right when she said that we (the tourists) would be the main attraction, not the monkeys. They did with us as they saw fit! With the exception of being a bit freaked out about a potential attack from Luna (which Heidi gives you fair warning about), the day couldn't have been more perfect. One-of-a-kind experience, truly. We stayed at the Royal, reserved a van costing $25/person round trip. Our reservation was at 10:30 and we got back to the resort around 1:30. Hint: ask to lay down so the monkeys can lay with you. You won't regret it!
