If you would like to pretend you are landed gentry and step back in time (with modern comforts), plan to stay at Temple House in Ballymote, Co.Sligo, Ireland. Temple House is a Georgian mansion situated on 1000 acres of sheep farm and woodland. The owners, the Percevals, have lived on the site since 1665. Near the main house is Temple Lake and the ruins of a 12th century castle built by the Knights Templar.
We recently stayed 3 glorious nights at Temple House. The rooms are luxurious, the food sensational, the owners welcoming, the service gracious, the grounds serenely bucolic. Roderick Perceval, the son, has recently taken over the running of the estate, and we found him to be a charming host. Temple House only has 6 rooms to let, so the number of guests is small. We ate meals together at the enormous dining room table, with drinks and coffee afterward in the drawing room, and many hours of pleasant conversation with other visitors. The Percevals make you feel like family or friends, rather than paying guests.
Anyone planning to visit the Sligo area and Yeats country should seriously consider making Temple House home base. Their website is ----------
