“Overrated!”
Reviewed August 5, 2012

Upon arrival we were greeted by the staff, quickly checked in and escorted to our room. (The Beech in Hawk's View). While the room was plenty large the cleanliness was unsatisfactory, especially the bathroom. The towels were not freshly laundered, the shower water supply shut off completely (for just a minute or so while showering) on 2 occasions and the entire bathroom needed a good cleaning.

Moving on to the view. I've stayed in several mountain inns from Banner Elk and Blowing Rock to Murphy, NC and I was a bit disappointed that the view was that of power lines and a partial mountain view while listening to the bustle of loud traffic moving up and down the mountain. This visit was planned for a couple of days of peaceful relaxation and that was simply not available. Secondly, if you are looking for privacy once your door closes, think again. The walls are very thin and the conversations of the neighbors could be heard without effort.

Now for the food. While we were being escorted to our room, I inquired if there were any really good places to go for breakfast. I was informed that since the breakfast was included in our stay that there was really no reason to go elsewhere. Well here is a reason. That was the worst breakfast I have ever been served. There is no need to go into detail as I don't have enough time to describe the experience except to say the food was horrible. Service was fine.

Dinner a Jackalopes was average for food quality and poor for value. The shrimp grits are some of the best I've had, the mac and cheese, poached asparagus and mashed potatoes were all good but my entree was average at best. I had the mixed grill of quail and antelope and my wife had the beef medallions. The quail was dry only to be saved by the sauce and the antelope was tasteless. My wife did enjoye her beef medallions and liked her dinner overall.

We decided to check out a day early and try something different.

Thank you for your feedback as we are continually striving to improve. We sincerely regret that none of your feedback was communicated in person as we feel that many of these things could have been remedied immediately. Typically our guests enjoy a cooked to order breakfast along with variety and choice as well as the evening meal typically being well received. Please know that if you visit again it is our commitment to ensure you have an enjoyable experience. Kindest regards, Candi

I'll start with the positives. Staff was friendly and very helpful. Breakfast was ok. The blinds in our room did not work so they put us in one of the rooms in Hawks Nest Lodge for a night while they got the blinds fixed. The staff was super nice and offered to move our bags for us. However, the room needed some upgrades (decent towels and better tv), but was adequate and had a great view. The next night we stayed in the Suite Room. This room is falling apart. Holes in the wall, broken headboard on bed, wallpaper peeling off the walls, slow drainage in the shower, very thin walls, no iron or ironing board. Now to the restaurant. When I think of Jackalopes' View I think...meh. I had the trout with some cold mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. My meal wasn't bad, but certainly not worth the effort. I would suggest the Speckled Trount in BR if you want fish. My wife's meal was sub-par. She had the beef medalions; don't order. Again, Jackalope's food isn't bad and it has a great view, but it's pretty average at best. Overall, the place is decent, but I probably won't stay there again. This place has a lot of potential, but it's not there yet.

Room Tip: Stay in Hawks Nest and not the Lodge.

Thank you for both your kind words and constructive comments as well. We are constantly working to improve and upgrade and appreciate your feedback.

Please know that we also welcome any feedback in person and find that many things such as an iron, slow drain, or a dislike to an entree can be quickly remedied when communicated in person.

The entire staff is committed to providing an enjoyable experience for our guests while staying at our historic mountain lodge.

We will look forward to your return!

Let's start with the positives: The staff is friendly, helpful, and welcoming. The mountain views from the restaurant and attached deck are outstanding. The resident lab is sweet, and the chocolate covered strawberries that came with the Living Social package were divine. The negatives were unique to our situation (my husband uses a cane and wheelchair), so able-bodied visitors may have a completely different take. (If you have trouble climbing stairs, this may not be the best choice for you, however, there could be more accessible room options based on availability.) The design of the Laurel Lodge (not sure about the newer Hawk's Nest Lodge or the rental homes) is funky--sort of a 70s ski chalet look and feel (lots of stairs and weird angles and interior windows). This used to be a private vacation home and now the indoor waterfall feature is part of the entrance hall (sans water), and the narrow, uneven stone staircase to our suite seemed like a rocky mountain trail. Since we got a good deal with Living Social (including a wonderful meal at the Jackalope's View Restaurant), we did not feel cheated in any way by leaving after only one night of our planned two night stay. If you're physically fit and up for a bit of adventure, then bring on the funk. If you're used to a more traditional mountain inn experience, stop in for dinner (make reservations in advance on weekend nights because the Jackalope is extremely popular) and head on up the road to Beech Mountain where there are more mainstream lodging options.

Room Tip: In the Laurel Lodge (where we stayed) the three first floor rooms on the front seemed like they woul...

First, we are glad you took advantage of the Hiking Package that was offered.
Thank you for your feedback, I was, in fact, the innkeeper with whom you spoke. Yes, we are a creative crew. I apologize again that the room was not a good fit for you. In the future we do have rooms that are easy access, so please don't hesitate to mention this and I have retiretated to all of our phone personell to please mention which rooms have stairs. Thanks foar the heads up on the blinds, they have been replaced. We look forward to you return! Regina

Just returned from a weekend stay at Archers Mountains Inn. Our room was on the second floor of the lodge with a wonderful view of the mountains. Vaulted ceiling, fireplace, coffeemaker, microwave and very spacious. All we needed for a very relaxing weekend. As stated, this is a mountain lodge. Not a five diamond resort. I think other reviewers may have been a bit harsh, complaining about sheets, blinds, remote controls and air conditioning. Our bathroom unit worked well too cool our room, we were not there to watch TV and the decor may not be up to Marriott standards. If you are looking for the Hampton Inn, stay in the valley.
Archers Mountain Inn is very comfortable, welcoming and, frankly, nostalgic. Great food, great location, friendly staff-we WILL go back.

My husband and I booked a two night stay for our anniversary. We were very disappointed in our room located in the Hawks's Nest Lodge. A few inexpensive upgrades would have made our stay so much more enjoyable. The sheets and comforters looked dingy and not of good quality.Same for the bath towels. The air conditioner was a window unit located in the bathroom. The bathroom was freezing but the room was not as cool as we would have liked. Bathroom was very small with rusty shower rod and mildewed shower curtain. Some of the light fixtures did not work. Some of the blinds were broken so even when closed there was no privacy. Not cool for a romantic getaway. We ended up rigging clothing over the holes to protect privacy. The carpet was dirty and had bare spots. The overall feeling of the room was that it wasn't very clean.

Room Tip: Room quality seems to vary greatly. Do some checking and choose wisely.

We were in the Roof Garden room. If you have difficulty walking at all, don't book that room. The stone steps up to it are difficult to manage. The private balcony with hot tub is wonderful. The view is breathtaking. We had dinner in the restaurant our first night. It was excellent. Breakfasts are excellent also. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The hotel needs some work. Our room was very dark which we didn't like so spent most of our time on the balcony.

Thank you for your feedback! Being a traditional lodge all rooms do differ. We do, however, have some options if you are trying to avoid stairs such as the Upper Level Hawks View (just a few stairs to your room) or one of our vacation homes which can provide level entry and one floor living. We look forward to your return!

The best thing about Archers is the staff. Very friendly, remembered your name. Made you feel at home. The food at the restaurant is excellent.
Breakfast is included in your stay and is great. Everything we tried there was great. The view is one of the best, especially from the upstairs bar, The Vault. The rooms were great, very nice and comfortable. We went for a two night stay and ended up staying four. Cannot wait to go back.
