Its a little bit of a hike but it is so worth it when you reach the top!! There is a very visible and well traveled path to the top and once you get there you will get to scramble around old hotel ruins and the views are amazing!! its def worth the trip! make sure you dress appropriately (check the weather).. it is chillier and alot windier at the top and make sure you leave enough time to make it to the bottom before it gets dark!!

I must confess that I'm a full time "visitor", being fortunate to actually live on Overlook Mountain :-).
After many years as weekenders my husband & I retired here almost 5 years ago. As others have mentioned, the views from here are spectacular since Overlook offers wonderful sights of the Hudson River, the Ashokan Reservoir, the Berkshires, and much of the Hudson Valley to the East and South. The hike up Overlook trail is not difficult, but it is an unrelenting upward grade, which can be hard on unpracticed knees :-). Echo Lake, near the summit where Overlook intersects with Indian Head, is a beautiful, remote spot where hikers can camp overnight. For the more adventuresome there are many opportunities for bushwacking along remnants of old bluestone quarry trails through tall stands of pines, hemlocks, oak, hickory, white birch & maple, threaded with deep crevices, small waterfalls & creek beds, & stunning rocky outcroppings. In late Spring, huge stands of Mountain Laurel, blueberry, viburnum & fragrant native azaleas can be found along the trails. In snowy months the old quarry trails provide lovely spots for cross country skiing and snow shoeing. With Woodstock and Saugerties nearby, Overlook is a lovely area at any time of year!

From your first visit, you will fall in love with the Catskills. The area is perfect for both avid and recreational hikers.

Overlook Trail is two things: A solid 2-hour workout for your glutes and a rewarding view that includes the ruins of an old hotel and a 360-panoramic from an old fire tower.

Your hike will start uphill and well, continue that way. The inclines aren't steep enough to merit bracing yourself, it's more of a steady increase in grade. Once at the top (it took me 45 minutes), you can walk around the stone skeleton of the old 1930's Overlook Hotel. Once you've spooked yourself a bit, it's an easy five-minute walk up to a picnic clearing that boasts an old fire tower. The tower is sturdy and open to the public, so climb up a few flights and snap a great panoramic of the mid-Hudson Valley.

The hike back down is the same path, making it an easy downhill hike. Beginning to end, we spent just under two hours there.

If you're into hiking and have a half-day then definitely check out Overlook Mountain! Our hike started off on a gravel service road that provides a rather lengthy gradual incline. As you get higher up of course the wind generally picks up pretty well. There's a bit of trail hiking in the mix as well. It took our group about a half day when all was said and done. There's an area to hang out at the top with tables and places to sit. Be advised that it can get foggy up at the top and, as previously mentioned, it's generally windy.

Overlook mountain is not one of the tallest in Catskills, but definitely one with the some of the best views.
The hike is not challenging, trail (the old fire road) is quite easy to walk and there are numerous attractions on the way up: ruins of old hotel, plenty of flowers and mushrooms, chipmunks and occasional deer.
There is also and old fire tower in a good condition with a breathtaking views from the top.
