Owner description: Whiteface may have made its name in winter, it has the highest vertical drop in the east, after all but it does summer pretty well too. The warmer months make Whiteface a natural setting for outdoor enthusiasts of all levels and ages, whether you're looking for an adrenaline rush or just an afternoon of beautiful views with your family. Take a hike along the Stag Brook Falls trail or Bear Den Mountain, play a round of Disc Golf and check out the area's most exhilarating, challenging Mountain Biking terrain. Or gather the family for an afternoon of taking it all in with a Scenic Cloudsplitter Gondola Ride to the summit of Little Whiteface. Drive the Whiteface Veteran's Memorial Highway to the summit, and lean into the Adirondack breeze as you marvel at the world below you. This well-known mountain offers exciting and scenic runs for skiers of all levels: Beginners do well on Easy Acres, which features its own ski school, novices and intermediates enjoy Little Whiteface, while experts head to the heart-pounding summit.

My 9 year old and I visited just past the peak fall foliage period. A large hay and pumpkin character greeted us at the entrance to the ski park. Still lots of colors to view and we had a beautiful sunny day. The ride up the mountain in the gondola was awesome. The skies were clear and we were able to see for miles around. At the summit, we were treated to more views of the mountain range. There was an area from which to take pictures or you could do some hiking along the ski runs that lead to higher areas of the mountain. Some people had mountain bikes to do this. Not sure if they rented them or they brought their own. The gondola takes about 45 minutes round trip. Not sure which was more breathtaking: the ride up or the ride down the mountain.

The highest lookout in New York State. Top of the mountain is absolutely gorgeous. The ride through Veterans Memorial Highway is breath taking. There is a castle where you can decide to hike up to the top of the mountain or there is an elevator for us older people. At the castle there is a souvenir shop and café. We had 45 MPH winds and a temp of 50 degrees when we were on top. There are hand rails to grab onto and a rocky area to climb out to. It was too windy to climb out on the rocks but there were many other hearty people who did climb out. A worth while adventure for those in the area and love mountain tops.

We drove up the highway to the castle . It was a great drive . There is a long tunnel into the mountain to the elevator but it is well lit. The elevator goes up 27 stories. The view at the top is amazing . We were lucky and could see a long way . I would not go up if it is in the clouds. Driving down is fine you use the low gear on your vehicle .

Visited Oktoberfest weekend and had a great visit. Use your Olympic sites passport to take the Gondola to the top of the ski hill. On top there are a number of hiking trails and viewing platforms. Fantastic views!

We just completed a great driving tour with stops at Whiteface Mountain and High Falls Gorge. I would suggest this route to anybody if you are looking for beautiful peaks, vistas, farm scenes and forests.

Leave Saranac Lake on Rt. 86 past Lake Colby on the left. You will pass Donnelly's Corner Ice Cream (closes at the beginning of September) on the left which has one of the most sweeping mountain views in New York. The parking lot is a great photo op location.

Continue on Rt. 86 until you reach the T at Bloomingdale - Gabriel's Rd. (Rt. 55) where you should turn right. When you get to Bloomingdale, turn left at the main intersection and immediately pull into the parking lot of Norman's General Store on the left. We were told by the owner that the store was established in 1904 by his father and is now run by himself and his son. The store still has original decor and equipment (walk-in meat cooler, chopping block, coffee grinder, safe, etc.). It was quite interesting speaking with the owners.

When leaving the parking lot continue on Rt. 3 toward Vermontville. Before you get to Vermontville, turn right onto Norman's Ridge Road. This road is known in the area for its old family farm (with buffalo) and its views of Whiteface Mountain. At the end of Norman's Ridge Road, turn left onto Fletcher Farm Road. Turn right onto Franklin Falls Road, then left at the falls (on the left) onto Rt. 48 (You will see the pond across the road to the right where there is a pull-off for taking pictures.)

From the parking lot at the pond turn right onto Rt. 48. The first right will still be Rt. 48 but is also known as Franklin Falls Road. This road turns into Gillespie Drive, then Whiteface Mountain Road, and takes you up the back side of Whiteface Mountain through forests and farm lands. At the T turn right to go onto Whiteface Veteran's Memorial Highway to Whiteface Mountain Summit (fee charged at the Gate House). The view up the road are beautiful. There are many stops along the way which offer great photo ops. There is a parking lot at the castle at the top. From the castle you can either climb the trail to the weather observatory/research center or walk through the tunnel and take the elevator to the top. I would suggest taking the elevator to the top and walking down if you want the experience of the walk. You should wear comfortable, sturdy shoes if you are walking the trail. The view from the top is awesome. We were lucky to have a fairly clear view of about 50 or 60 miles. Be aware that the only toilet facility on the mountain is in the castle. The castle also has a gift shop and restaurant.

Upon leaving Whiteface Mountain go straight onto Rt. 431 which will take you to Wilmington. At the intersection you will see "Candy Man" Adirondack candy store. Wilmington also is the home of one of the last A&W Root Beer stand (closed at the time of our trip). When leaving the candy store, turn left onto Rt. 86 which will take you through Wilmington Notch past Whiteface Mountain Ski Center. Shortly thereafter you will see High Falls Gorge on your right which has trails leading to the falls (fee charged). Continue on Rt 86 which will lead you to Lake Placid and then back to Saranac Lake.

I hope you enjoy your day as much as we did.
