My wife and I went to Novel during Restaurant week, when restaurants are often crowded and stressed. Novel handled it beautifully. The server, Carolyn I think, was among the best we have ever had: knowledgeable, fast, funny, and perfectly attentive. Not too much and not too little. My Manhattan was good, good sized, and reasonably priced. Dinner: my wife's scallops were a large portion and delicious, and she liked her salad too. My pork belly app was a little stringy on the bottom, but I've never ordered pork belly before so what do I know? My salmon was perfectly cooked and terrific, nice and juicy and sweet. Dessert was part of the deal, and they just brought some light chocolaty stuff in a parfait glass. Not only was it good, but having only one option on the restaurant week menu meant that they could just bring it out at the right time without consuming a lot of ordering time. This is the first time I've seen a place really plan their RW menu in order to let the kitchen keep up with the crowd. We never felt rushed and had a really good dinner. We'll certainly be back.

For years, my wife and I had gone to Amaretto Bistro after seeing a movie at a nearby theater. Then Amaretto closed for renovations for several months. Well, the restaurant has reopened, and is much larger, swankier, and tastier than ever. Amaretto was always a classy small Italian restaurant with a limited but very good and consistent menu. It was quiet, adult-oriented (no TV above the bar), even romantic. Reinvented as NOVEL, the restaurant is now twice the size, having taken over an adjacent defunct business storefront. It has a banquet room, dining separate from the bar (which now has a smallish TV above it), and it is no longer as quiet because so many people have discovered how GOOD the food is! Some of the old favorites are still on the menu, but a touch of class has been added to the offerings, especially the appetizers and small plates such as oysters, octopus, crudo, foie gras, calamari, and duck confit. My wife and I shared the grilled octopus with a walnut goat cheese salad, and a baked swordfish with risotto and asparagus entree. Our dining companion settled for the baked salmon with beluga lentils. Everything was delicious. And we were happy to see that the restaurant had retained its custom of providing an amuse bouche at the start, a basket of bread and semolina chips, and a small after-dinner chocolate truffle. Service was a little slower than usual, probably because there was a wedding dinner going on in the back room, but leisurely was fine with us. The wine list, curiously, had hardly changed, so we ordered our old favorites. Nothing too extraordinary, but some decent choices. Delighted to see this restaurant back in business and apparently making it.

Had dinner here with 2 friends and we were less than impressed. Two of us had been to amaretto and had enjoyed it very much. Novel has been enlarged and redone but the food and service has suffered. We ordered a bottle of wine for 2 of us and my other friend ordered a cocktail. Her drink came after a while but our wine wasn’t brought over until after the waitress took our order. She messed up my friend’s dinner order and acted annoyed when it was pointed out to her. I ordered the beet and bacon salad and was very disappointed. The spinach in the salad was wilted and the beets were very thin slices that tasted like they came out of a jar. Definitely would not return.
