Reviewed August 2, 2012

My two teenagers and I spent 2 nights here while visiting West Point. The hotel is quite historical and very formal. We felt out of place in our jeans but not a big deal. Here are my observations:
:
1. Well maintained and excellent location. You must pass through a check point and show ID.
2. The front desk staff was curt but efficient. Out of all the hotels I stayed in NY the staff here was not overly friendly.
3. I parked in the lot below the hotel and it was a short uphill hike to the property. On the day I arrived it was raining and it was nice they had a van to drive us to the property.
4. We stayed in the executive suites which was recently renovated. Upon entering the nicely spacious room (I believe a king bed and a sofa couch in the front room) the smell of paint was overwhelming. I am sure over time the smell will diminish. The bathroom was also spacious.
5. Both phones in the room and the refrigerator were not working. I should have complained when I discovered these items were not working but I just told them when I checked out.
6. The restaurant was very good and attentive and friendly staff.
7. One reason I would never return is the fact that in each bedroom there is a fire/smoke detector on the ceiling that when the lights are off it appears there is a strobe light in your room! Hard to fall asleep with those little lights blinking in the dark (had to cover my head with a pillow!!!!). It must be a state law because I observed other hotels in NY having similar detectors but since they were on the wall I was able to conceal the light with a small towel.

Room Tip: Executive Suites are the newest rooms and are spacious .

We are glad that you enjoyed the beauty of our location and that our restaurant staff gave you great, friendly service. We are sorry that the phones and refrigerator were not working: we are committed to resolving maintenance issues immediately, and quickly fixed the telephones after you notified us. We have a policy of keeping the refrigerators unplugged when the room is unoccupied (one of our efforts to reduce energy use in the hotel), and have since verified that when plugged in, the refrigerator in the room you stayed in does work. We are working with our Front Desk team to ensure that every guest is warmly welcomed. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.

Rooms were quaint, staff was wonderful and restaurants were very nice. Great location. Bathroom floor could have been cleaned better before we arrived. Great atmosphere. Took a tour of West Point and that was fascinating.

We recently stayed at the Thayer Hotel and had a wonderful time! The Hotel is amazing, clean and the staff couldn't have been any nicer. The rooms were well appointed and very clean. I loved the cozy beds!!!!! Our weekend began at the Brotherhood winery which is a short distance from the hotel. Later when we returned to the hotel we enjoyed drinks at Patton's Tavern which is located right off the main hotel lobby. We also dined at the hotel's restaurant "MacArthur's" and we enjoyed a fabulous dinner! I had Sherman's Seafood Risotto that was cooked to perfection! We ended the evening at the hotel's roof-top bar where we enjoyed the music and sipped after-dinner drinks. Before leaving the hotel, you must take a guided tour of the grounds of West Point! The history and the beauty of the grounds are breathtaking! I highly recommend this hotel and promise you that you will not be disappointed!!!!!

Then you have found the right place! My husband and I returned this weekend from a one night stay at the Thayer Hotel. Upon arrival we were welcomed graciously. Check in was quick and efficient. And what a grand hotel! You get a real sense of history when you stay at this hotel. Our room was on the fifth floor and overlooked the Hudson river with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. In addition we noted that the grounds were beautifully maintained. We opted for a Friday night seafood buffet and were pleased with what was offered. The following morning we enjoyed the breakfast buffet. Through a Groupon offer we received 50.00 toward dinner and a complimentary breakfast buffet. We thought this was a great value. On both days the waitstaff was very attentive to our needs. Today we have many choices about where we can spend our money. It is apparent to me that the employees at the Thayer Hotel have learned the much forgotten word "customer service." You get an A+. Thanks for making our stay special.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the fifth floor overlooking the Hudson River.

If anyone is looking for a romantic and beautiful trip to West Point..consider staying at the "Thayer Hotel" located right on the West Point grounds. My husband and I were so very pleased not only with the beauty of the hotel but with the gorgeous grounds(well kept)..the beds were so cozy and comfortable...the service totally amazing...the professional staff..but also with the delicious food. We had a romantic dinner in the Thayer Dining room...drinks in the bar...I think we actually closed the bar one night! They have a great lounge on the Roof called the"Zulu Lounge"...As the daughter of an Army veteran (40 Years), it was so wonderful to share memories of West Point and the Army..As a Proud wife of a Navy Veteran ..it was also fun to share stories of the rivalry between the Navy and Army. I guess bottom line is....if you want...great food...a romantic room with great bedding...a beautiful setting on the Hudson River...and to create another memory...visit the "Thayer Hotel" at West Point....b sure to take the tour..and stop at the museum...Thank Thayer! Can't wait to return!!!! BTW...the Dining room gals surprised us with a special Anniversary Dessert...on them!

Room Tip: Ay room at the Thayer is Excellant...the beds are to Die for!!!!!

Stayed at the Thayer Hotel in July purely as a stopover for a night so we could do some serious shopping at the Woodbury Village outlet Centre. For the uninitiated, the Woodbury Village is a must for bargain hunters looking for branded goods in the US.

But back to the Thayer. A few things to note, location wise, it's amazing. It's located within the Westpoint Military academy on the Hudson. Scenically it's idyllic and the suite we had was well equipped. Very spacious and large and all mod cons. However, the downside is, it's not actually that close to Woodbury Village and the complimentary shuttle they run isn't that frequent and when you weigh it up, you actually end up driving there yourself as it's more efficient.

Also, the staff aren't the most helpful. There don't appear to be that many of them, certainly not on the front desk or the bellmen. Also, the layout can be confusing. We were in a suite in the new wing, which meant a lift up to the Mezzanine, a walk through to the new wing, then up a flight of stairs to our floor and walk down a long corridor. Not ideal when you have 4 large cases to carry around..... As for the quality of food as well. The lunchtime buffet isn't really that good and the roof terrace bar menu is below par. It's almost like they have a captive audience so know they don;t have to try that much.

In short, the location, views and quality of the rooms are fantastic and if you were having a wedding here, I'm sure it would be amazing. But in terms of why you'd stay there, there must be alternatives if it's purely for the shopping!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main building. Slightly older but at least more accessible.

We apologize that our shuttle times were not convenient to your schedule, and that you were not assisted with your luggage to your room. We are committed to exceeding guest expectations at The Thayer Hotel, and have recently conducted Service Excellence Training with our Bellmen and Front Desk associates. I love the Thayer Hotel in many ways. It is loaded with atmosphere, from the stained glass windows to the granite walls to the military memorabilia. It's particularly meaningful to an army brat, which is what I am. And, the views of the Hudson valley were to die for! My room was comfortable, spacious and well laid out. If only the Thayer had something other than a mess sergeant as a chef and if only the value were there. $200 a night is far too stiff. But, I wallowed in what the Thayer has, tolerated what was marginal and bit the bullet on the price and was glad I did. It was a nice & nostalgic stay. The Thayer could be a 5 star review without too much more work.

Room Tip: Don't miss the Zulu bar, with spectacular outside seating. Was pleasant, even in late July.
