We’d just spent an idyllic afternoon at The Lost Springs in Whitianga and finished a perfect day with snapper and garlic chips from Jandals which we ate on Whitianga sea front. I’m not usually a fish and chips fan,, but these are exceptional

Great cafe, excellent for breakfast and nice atmosphere with friendly staff. Foreign visitors may not know that New Zealanders call thongs (flip flops) "jandals" and this is their theme, appropriate for a beach town. Their home made muesli was my choice. We visited in July 2018 and I see that more recent reviews comment on the change of ownership.

So on August 1, the ownership of Jandals Cafe changed. Whilst the change was only fairly recent, it seemed a good idea to check out the new ownership to see whether anything much had changed in the immediate aftermath.

First impressions were not good. The new owners were stuck in the kitchen, not engaging with the customers. This apparently was the norm. Not good for a hospitality business, especially with so much competition in town.

Anyway, I sampled the same things I sampled about a week before the change of ownership to make a comparison between old and new. Waffles and for take home a Blueberry and White Chocolate Muffin.

Immediately apparent with the waffles was that the bacon was undercooked and the fruit and syrup was less generous than before, but apart from the bacon still very good.

The Blueberry and White Chocolate Muffin on the other hand was awful. The stodgiest sweet muffin I have ever had and so bad I could not eat it all and threw half of it away. Not even warming it up in the microwave helped. The previous owner and chef obviously was a vastly better baker than the new owner and chef.

There have been a few examples in Whitianga where a change of ownership of a cafe has been detrimental to the quality of the food. I hope that this is not another example.

Visited Jandals as we walked past it the previous evening. There was no decaf coffee available which was a shame however the lemon posset was yummy. The cafe was very tired looking and needed a bit of TLC and tidying up.

We had a lovely breakfast here this morning. We had the corn fritters and salmon eggs Benedict. Both were yummy and very filling. Prompt service and reasonably priced. Thank you!
