I have always seen Kate Lamont as one of the "institutions" of dining in Perth.
Over the years, have made many pilgimages to the Swan Valley for the amazing marron with beure blanc sauce and East Perth with its amazing setting by the water.
Her food has always been modern, adventurous and yet comforting at the same time.
So it was with pleasure that I saw the sign saying "Lamonts" as we pulled into the Smiths Beach Resort car park.
Unfortunately the car park was the best view we got there - nothing by comparison to the winery in the Swan or the water at East Perth.
The food was ok but if I didn't know Kate Lamont's involvement, I would have just said "good but not special" and it was handy not having to drive around aimlessly for a meal.
The restaurant's design missed the mark though - East Perth was quite a stunning modern design - the different materials and textures here didn't come together and the room lost any emotive feeling.
It was a plus though having their delicatessan there with a few value options and the breakfast is good quality.

Ended up at Lamonts on a long weekend for lunch by default. (Everywhere else was full!) Now I know why this restaurant wasn't. The food we ordered was nice but not amazing. We ordered a main meal, glass of wine and a beer and shared a desert. The bill was $120 for two. There was a mistake with our bill where we were charged for an extra meal (entree worth $18.00). When I pointed this out, the staff were very flippant and refunded the amount with as much as an apology. My friend left her credit card at the counter by accident so the waitress ran the card out to her with the comment, "you would have more to worry about than $18 if you forgot this." Wouldn't bother going back.

We only ordered a main course and we both had the chicken. To be polite it was extremely bland and dry with the best part being the pumpkin and peas. We also ordered a salad which on paper sounded lovely, with avocado and pine nuts. The avocado must have had the night off and the dressing was completely tasteless. Overall a very very disappointing meal with a dining room full of insects which also added to the unpleasant experience. Certainly not cheap either! Never again!

Went to Lamonts at Smiths Beach during our tour of the South West. Didn't know it had moved from original location to Smiths Beach but the short ride to the new location was worth it as it is almost on the beach.
The restaurant has a very pleasant ambiance and is decorated in modern but reserved style.
Had no problems getting a seat for lunch. The restaurant has a good food list with specials and a classy wine list. Decided on the daily special which was lamb wrapped in proscutto ham - absolutely delightful and a very filling meal. Ordered a local SSB wine which was also very pleasant.
For desert we shared a lemon tart with cream which was very nice.
Service was good.
Overall a very pleasant experience

This restaurant would be in the top few if it was based in Perth. The decor is minimalist but the welcome and service by the staff (one at this time) was first class. The food and wine were really to die for and we could not ask for better. As the weather was foul we were the only ones there. The waitress not only chatted with us but offered free tasting of the best wine they had. A memorable meal for our 49th wedding anniversary.
