Rottnest (Rat's nest in Dutch) named by Vlaminck after the rare marsupial Quokkas that are found here. It was and is a hugely popular destination for WA people...the government owned chalets are competed for by lottery each year. The pub and bakers are famous (but a bit overrated these days). Ironically in the 10th century the island was the prison to which "recalcitrant" (read heroic?) Aboriginal men who had resisted authority were sent...they are buried here in a site that can still be seen, though not much notice is given to it. It has been called WA's Robbin island and the comparison bears the ring of truth. The Museum shows the whole history including its role as a defensive position in World War II. But say a prayer for the several hundred dead indigenous people buried here in unnamed plots...

Well worth the visit. I even took my 8 and 4 year old and we talked about the displays there and the history of the island. Its only a gold coin donation. The display are good for a basic museum and it gives a great History lesson. The volenteer guides are very knowledgeable and know most answers to your questions.

This little museum is informative and worth a visit to learn about the history of the island. There are displays of people from the early days and information about the natural habitat. The guides are helpful.

This is a good place to get a quick overview of the history, geology and wildlife of Rottnest. Some of the displays are looking a bit tired but it is still worth a visit.
