Thompsons Bay is the main bay on Rottnest and is the most croweded. Its good for getting lunch and being around a little civilisation but the best parts of the island are a little more secluded. The Basin is great for snorkelling and the further west you go on the north or south coast the less people and the more pristine the island gets! If you want nice calm waters, be smart and find out which way the wind is coming from, if its a southerly (generally in the afternoons it will be) hit bays on the north coast and visa versa! The far west end of the island isnt much chop (too far out in the ocean and too remote!).
