“Sensational! Wine, food, view, servce and host!”
Reviewed March 1, 2014

You know when someone refers you to a restaurant or winery how very often it does not quite live up to the expectation, not in this case. Thank you Ros and Marty :)
After we turned off the main road, a gorgeous drive along a country road, treated to kangaroos and evening light. The anticipation was building with the dive..
The Winery is tucked away and a real jewel...
The owner John Small greeted us with his beaming smile and instantly we felt welcome. The wines lived up to every award they had, seriously all sophisticated and palatable.
The restaurant, is intimate, and open to the gorgeous view down the property. The ambiance relaxing and you feel like a real guest.
Now to the food, lets just say every single thing on the menu made my taste buds feel alive. So hard to order. The food is sophisticated yet not pretentious and the servings are all perfect. I do not usually do not have three courses, but I could not resist. The service was amazing and even though it is a casual sit down service we felt special.
A must visit........

“Gourmet food, divine location”
Reviewed February 20, 2014 via mobile

We visited Smallwater Estate for lunch and were very impressed with both the venue (the views!) and the menu. I had the smoked Spanish sausage with a beet & orange salad… yummy and very filling! For dessert I tried the chocolate torte and had an afogato. Mmm... And I took home a bottle of Shiraz which was well deserving of its award winning status! We highly recommend this place!

“Surprise food and wines to die for”
Reviewed December 1, 2013

a friend who lives in Balingup took us to Smallwater but what a lucky break to arrive around lunch time.We received a wonderful friendly welcome from Gail, john and especially from Frankie the female staffie pup:-)
Smallwater is about 3 kms up a gravel road set in a lovely valley where John has constructed a series of Marron dams sypathetically down two water courses.
we came for the wine tasting but after we saw the menus we stayed for lunch and were very glad of it.
Entering the winery cellar door finds you in a lovely sitting room as though you have entered someone's living room.gail runs you through the wines that surprise , surprise are ALL delicious.we tried the whites and reds and even the port and they were all wonderful and deserving of all the medals that they have won. The cav sav is rich and has a most wonderful blackberry nose. the Shiraz is beautiful with full delicious flavours and a subtle finish. The Rose is a real surprise .made from Zinfandel and one of the very best we have ever had.the young Zinfandel is complex but held in the mouth has all sorts of things happening. What a treat. The port was light but just the ticket and went beautifully with the deserts that we consumed later.
the dining room is small but very tasteful with views out over the main pond and glimpses of the vineyards through the trees.there is a small garden courtyard outside as well. We ate inside and had a delicious starter of baked ricotta with warm olives and crusty baguette toasts. We all tried different mains . I had the site farmed Marron pie which came with an individual salad with strawberry and kiwi fruit . It was delicious and the pastry was perfect. the Marron could have been a bit less cooked for mine and the sauce a tad more seasoned.one of the girls had the sticky pork which was dry but came with beautiful crackling served with a delicious Asian style salad and dressing featuring peach pieces.the mushroom and asparagus risotto was also delicious and everyone was happy with their choices. A bottle of the delicious Rose and Zinfandel AND a port with dessert kept everyone laughing. Gail was the perfect host and shared the history of the place and the future ideas. Dessert was shared and all were sweet without being over the line , presented beautifully and the plates left clean:-)
we left with a mixed dozen and quite a lot inside:-) the prices are very reasonable for the quality.
Highly recommend the experience.

“Fantastic little winery – great service & great food.”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

John & Gail are a great team – We were made to feel very welcome from the moment we walked in the door. John was running the wine tastings & Gail running the restaurant – a simple but exceptionally well put together menu.

We tasted the onion & goats cheese tart and baked ricotta with croutons for entrée,

Foe Main we had the Marron in Garlic butter with salad, chicken & leek pot pie, Thai beef salad, Moroccan Chicken with cous cous and Mediterranean tart all were completely polished off with only nice things said around the table.

Marron were cooked beautifully and they have a small menu for the kids.

We were a little bit surprised by the $7.50 per bottle corkage to drink their own wine in their restaurant but between a group of 6 people and 2 bottles of wine it didn't really matter overall. Just be aware is all.

We didn’t get to dessert but we will definately be back to Balingup another time and will definitely leave room for it.
