Description: It's been a full circle for Silas and Angela, who in 2007, along with their children, Marley and Levi (Lumeah was born in 2008), packed up their life in Victoria and headed to Denmark where Silas had been offered the position as head chef at Forest Hill Vineyard. With his passion for locally sourced produce combined with his love of spices, Silas' dishes became a big hit. Fast track to 2010 and Pepper & Salt Restaurant was born! Silas' creativity with herbs and spices produced an outstanding menu that showcased his Fijian-Indian heritage, and with Angela and the team's friendly and attentive service, Pepper & Salt Restaurant became a favourite amongst locals and tourists alike. In 2013, Silas and Angela welcomed the opportunity to relocate their restaurant from Rockcliffe Winery to Forest Hill Vineyard where they continue to develop creative dishes paired with excellent service.

Silas, the chef is absolutely fantastic! The food is awesome, service is great and the view during the day is beautiful. You will not be disappointed! Close to town and the beat place to eat in Denmark.

“A special touch!”
Reviewed April 7, 2014

We booked a table for twelve for Sunday lunch. The restaurant setting, service, wine tasting and food was fantastic. All the meals arrived at the same time. I selected the Tapas plate and it was delicious. One of our friend's commented on how perfectly cooked his salmon was, so Silas invited him into the kitchen and showed him how it was done. A few of the ladies ordered the Affogatos at the end of the meal and fancied something chocolate-ee so Silas whipped something up in a few minutes and we devoured it just as quick. Lindt orange chocolate dipped in chocolate sauce and then dipped in shaved spiced coconut. Divine!!

“P&S rank second to Kirby's @ Rickety Gate”
Reviewed March 27, 2014

We recently re-visited Pepper & Salt at Forest Hill Winery with some friends as Chef Silas had moved back there after a stint at RockCliff. We hadn't been there for quite some time and as we had been to Kirby's @ Rickety Gate the week before we thought it a good time to compare what we consider Denmark's top two restaurants. We were somewhat disappointed at Pepper & Salt as the first thing we noticed was that the menu had changed very little and it just didn't excite the senses. We started with a (one and a half size) tasting plate between 4, which we were advised should have served 4-5 people. Two of us had to go without tasting either the Kofta Balls or Lamb Noisette as there were only 3 provided of each. Our friends noticed that tasting plates (for 2 to 3) people arriving at other tables looked exactly the same size as ours so we're not sure what happened to the other half plate we paid for. The plate cost us $90 and was over-rated. We felt somewhat aggrieved when we were charged $5 for some extra slices of bread to finish the dip (It seems the done thing these days for restaurants to provide less bread/crackers required to actually eat the dish served). Whilst our mains were very nice, they did not delight and we can hardly remember what we had. Quite the opposite experience to Kirby's where we are all still discussing the fantastic meals and service we had there. In fairness our friends are going to contact P&S and discuss what we think was probably an oversight on their part re the platter. All in all still a very nice restaurant to visit, but we felt let down and that P&S has dropped the ball.

“New name @ Forrest Hill, still fabulous !”
Reviewed March 23, 2014

We dined at what was then Greenpool 5 years ago on our honeymoon, when Silas was first chef at Forrest Hill before moving across to Rockcliffe. That was memorably the best degustation meal ever, so I was thrilled to find that Silas had returned when I booked a surprise birthday lunch for my husband during last week's return to Denmark to celebrate his 70th.

Our delight was fully justified at every level, even to the point of being (randomly) seated at the same table as previously, on a glorious autumn day when the sun came out after the grey drizzle of the day before.

We chose this time to begin with Silas' signature Coconut Prawns on Vermicelli - YUM ! For mains we had the perfectly-cooked Eye Fillet Steak with Scallops and the Burmese Spiced Duck, both of which were superb. All the while our young waiter was attentive and helpful, even bringing me a selection of wines to sample before making my choice to order. We finished with a very interesting Coconut & Cardamom Arancini dessert and one very decadent Chocolate & Sour Cherry creation, plus excellent coffees.

Before leaving we took Silas up on his offer to photograph us overlooking the valley, which he did most generously. This restaurant remains amongst the very best of our list of favourite restaurants around Oz & NZ, and there is plenty of stiff competition! Combined with an excellent choice of house & Rockcliffe wines, the delicious, imaginative dishes created with fresh local produce are well worth the money & the effort to get there.

Staff where just plan rude! No welcome had to keep asking for drinks, a wait of of over hour for main meal, and it was average, What I and my guests didn't like is sitting next other dinners.
