Fantastic location. Easy going, relaxed experience. Unlike motels, this has a great sense of space and freedom. An ideal place to stop off on our tour of the south west. Denmark is an awesome place to visit

I've read some of the reviews for Gum Grove Chalets and don't think they reflect how cool it is to be staying in cheap accomodation that is far enough away to feel remote, but close enough to still get out there and do stuff. We have stayed twice, first time in 2007 and second time for my honeymoon in 2010.

Rooms were clean, spiders were plentiful but there was fly spray and everything was clean. The site manager didn't live on site, we booked out when we were able to and left the keys in the box.

The only issue was a bat that moved in when we were cooking outside and we didn't close a sliding door - took us 2 days to convince the little bugger to leave, but we figured it out and it added to the fun.

My hubby and I enjoyed our stay on our honeymoon, it was just what we needed.

Room Tip: Stone cottages are cooler :-)

We booked one of the dog-fiendly cottages at the bottom of chalets called Karri. Karri is a cosy cottage with basic amenties of kitchenette, bathroom and toilet shared for two bedrooms (1 queen and 1 with 2 single beds), open plan dining with 2 seat sofa and a dining (folding) for 4. Even though I felt the interiors might seem too cramped for 4 adults, it worked perfectly fine for us as we were three and a jack russel.Plus there is no pet bond here unlike some other 'pet friendly' places we looked into and dogs are allowed indoors with you.

Our biggest concern on reading reveiws here was cleanliness, but we let ourselves into the cottage to find it spic and span with welcome tea, coffee, milk in fridge, towels and kitchen stocked with basic cookpans etc. Sofas were not fabric -so were free of dog-fur or any bad smell - ditto for everything else in this cottage.
It's true that one has to let themselves in and drop of keys into a box while leaving- the caretaker (kylie) is not always on-site but lives closeby to come on-call when contacted by owner for sorting any stuff as they arise. So when we needed to extend our stay , Mark (owner) was available on phone and put us through to Kylie who was most helpful and gracious with information. SO I would recommend estabilishing contact with Mark few days before arrival incase problems arise - he has been wonderfully courteous with us everytime we called him with questions before and during our stay. He also gave us a discount for the extended day :). We had no-issues of any sort during the stay here - so very happy with service.

There is wireless I-net that did not catch signal from our cottage but if one sits on the reception porch with laptop, then one can surf net at no extra cost. But one would need to get the password from Kylie or Mark - hence good idea to ask such queries before arrival. Our room had TV with all digital channels available and Kylie had informed that they also had DVD's for hire.

Being in bush - there are bugs, but the cottage has flyscreens and bug-spray provided.

Location-wise , this is excellent. So this may not be a chalet but it is a cottage that is good value for money with no additional conditions for pets.

When we arrived and a notice board told us our key was in the chalet so we let ourselves in. It was very relax atomsphere and we felt quite at home. The electric was off for about an hour before ir was reset, but we were out so we didn't care.

Nice clean comfortable rooms and a great location! The swings etc for children. Very peaceful & great value for money. Will definitely be returning.

My family went to the Gum Grove Chalets for three nights for our only holiday of the year.

For $150.00 a night for a self-contained chalet, we expected it to be basic. We were still a bit disappointed however.

The facilities were fine - old yes, but working no problem - and there was clean linen.
They supplied a portacot and a high chair that were modern and good. This was excellent.

It's probably just the fact that they have not been done up for years - ie: the couch is ancient and has obviously had hundreds of people sitting on it. Being fabric it had absorbed a lot of sweat - my children's hair smelt like old man sweat after sitting on the couch. There was hair and muck under the cushions when I had to retrieve something between the cushions.

The chalet had an overpowering smell of fried fish that had obviously been cooked there (with no vent over the stove) that made it uncomfortable to be in. We should have probably asked to move units retrospectively.

There are greasy lace curtains on every window.

The sliding door kept coming of it's rail which was a pain.

The setting was beautiful - in the bush and a great distance from town. We enjoyed this. The playground is really old and the sand is very dirty, so we couldn't use this as much as we had liked.

We still had a good time but I did find it depressing. Obviously in tourist towns people get away with this.

I was concerned of the reviews online, which is why I am writing to share my positive experience.

The communication to locating a room without a manned office was no problem as it was clearly communicated with directions and we had no problem at all. We had one minor issue and contacted the care taker who advised us accordingly which did not affect our stay what ever.

The chalets were self contained and despite what you read were CLEAN and fully furnished as required. Obviously the chalets are located in the bush so the usual insects were no surprise.

Location just outside of town but close by to the inlet which made a nice walk.

Overall my friends and I had a really great time and are already planning our next visit.
