My family went to the Gum Grove Chalets for three nights for our only holiday of the year.
For $150.00 a night for a self-contained chalet, we expected it to be basic. We were still a bit disappointed however.
The facilities were fine - old yes, but working no problem - and there was clean linen.
They supplied a portacot and a high chair that were modern and good. This was excellent.
It's probably just the fact that they have not been done up for years - ie: the couch is ancient and has obviously had hundreds of people sitting on it. Being fabric it had absorbed a lot of sweat - my children's hair smelt like old man sweat after sitting on the couch. There was hair and muck under the cushions when I had to retrieve something between the cushions.
The chalet had an overpowering smell of fried fish that had obviously been cooked there (with no vent over the stove) that made it uncomfortable to be in. We should have probably asked to move units retrospectively.
There are greasy lace curtains on every window.
The sliding door kept coming of it's rail which was a pain.
The setting was beautiful - in the bush and a great distance from town. We enjoyed this. The playground is really old and the sand is very dirty, so we couldn't use this as much as we had liked.
We still had a good time but I did find it depressing. Obviously in tourist towns people get away with this.
