“Fantastic farm stay for the kids and the adults!”
Reviewed January 6, 2011

We travelled as a group of two adults and 4 children aged 5-8 and stayed for 4 nights and had an absolute blast! I would highly recommend Lucieville to anyone travelling to Perth and the South West of Western Australia. In fact, I hesitate to put this review here in case the word gets out about how amazing this place is!

Farm owners Michael and Pat are lovely, and very happy to have the kids follow them around day and night as they go about life on this small farm. The morning feeding ritual involved feeding milk to the lambs, feeding the chickens, turkeys, guinea pigs, rabbits, pigs, emus, water buffalo and donkeys (bring your wellies! and old clothes - this isn't a place for your best resort wear).

For the rest of the day, there is bushland to walk through, horse riding is optional, canoes to paddle about on in the dam, and the odd ride in Michael's ute to move the horses. A pet kangaroo named Chloe, and the farm Kelpie 'Jess' are never too far away either.

There are many beautiful spots a short drive away from the farm, and Bridgetown is a quick trip up the road, but we really only left the farm for supplies.

We stayed in one of the bigger chalets. It was basic, but perfect for a farm stay. I imagine the chalets would get quite cold in winter and fairly hot in summer as the walls of the A-frames are very thin.

We've visited Lucieville twice and enjoyed it both times. The cabins are basic but clean and adequate (and the design is great) but the point of this place is the animals and the experience of being on a living farm. Each morning at nine you can help feed the animals, and this is an hour-long experience including bottle-feeding lambs and cows in spring, giving the pigs your left overs from last night's dinner, riding on a pig, feeding the emus, holding baby rabbits, feeding the chooks and getting their eggs, and milking the cow. Kids all get to be involved and are treated as friends and helpers. Later on in the day you're invited to join in on driving in the horses or bringing the sheep back from the paddock - lots of fun for city kids! There's a tiny lake with little canoes manageable by the 8-10 year old set, and some old playground equipment near the bbq. If there are enough people they do night time kangaroo spotting too. And you can go for a ride.

The best time to go is in spring, I think, and summer can get too hot. We were there in September, which was perfect, and then later in December, which could have been too hot (only some chalets have aircon) but the weather turned out fine. There was only one other family there in December, though, whereas it was almost full in September. And so there were fewer activities, although the morning animal feed was just as good both times.

The chalets have open stairs up to the top floor, which is where the beds are, so aren't great for toddlers. The large chalets have one bedroom downstairs, so we put our toddler there. You bring your own linen and towels, or you can rent them. Bring soap, too. There's detergent and reasonable cooking facilities.
