“avoid the roast”
Reviewed June 19, 2012

Usually, the salad bar is kept spotless and provides a good selection - as it ought.
Venue is TAB / Pokies but has dining room out the back which is suitable for meetings, group gatherings etc.
The quality of the food varies as does the attitude of the waitering staff, some training wouldn't go astray.
Unless you go for a "special" which are v good value, depending upon the night, the food is for such a venue $$$$. Regardless, avoid the roast. It's slithers of days old roast that's given a bit of warmth before being drowned in room temperature Gravox. No reason for this when a roast can be organised easily and when the word gets around BINGO, good business. Eat early, always a good idea with a salad bar. Railway Hotel is good value (bookings essential) on Tuesdays.

“Not as friendly as it sound...”
Reviewed May 23, 2012 via mobile

Overall we had a good meal, however off to a shaky start. Walked thro the front door to find ourselves in the middle of the darts competition and weren't sure where to go. Table staff were busy with a function in the back room however they were friendly and helpful.
Dining room lacked atmosphere but meals were as good as you would expect at any decent pub.

“Do not take your children!!!”
Reviewed March 29, 2012

Yes, there is a children's play room. The blocks are covered in black grime and appear to have never seen soap. There are no baby change facilities. There is no warning until after you have paid for your meal (even when they see your pram with baby in clear view). They are rude and unhelpful. I do not recommend if you have a young family.

“Best Value in Castlemaine”
Reviewed February 21, 2012

We were called to Castlemaine for a family emergency and ended up staying for 4 weeks until issues resolved themselves. There are many nice eateries in Castlemaine but we wanted somewhere where we could afford to eat out at least once a week to give us a break from cooking and the issues we were facing. The Cumberland Hotel was an inviting hotel which has been renovated in a stylish fashion. Castlemaine is an old gold mining town so many of the buildings are very old and have lots of character. The Cumberland has "special" nights throughout the week eg Tuesdays were parmiagiana or schnitzel night where you received a whopping dish of good quality for $12. The meal came with chips and there was a salad bar which was adequate, or you could choose to have vegetables. The schnitzels were quite thick and are made "in-house" which is a change from the usual frozen variety you get in many pubs. The Cumberland became "our pub". The quality of the food was good, plentiful and affordable.
