“Great Place”

Stayed in "four person cabin" which could easily house 6. John and Jenny are a great and down to earth pair. Weather didn't co-operate but facilities were more than adequate. Value for the dollar is high.

The view alone from the top deck of this lodge makes it worthy of a recommendation. The wrap around deck allows a 180 degree view of Lake Temagami, and has comfortable 'muskoka-style' wooden chairs for lounging.

Each of the 5 rooms in this lodge is different, so here's a quick guide:

Room #1: closest to the 'common area', and has two double beds, a bathroom and great lake views.

Room #2: a corner room with great lake views, a bathroom, space for 6 (?...I just peaked in when the door was open temporarily), and the only room with a small fridge.

Room #3: the largest of the rooms, and with a setup that includes two separate sleeping areas and a common bathroom. Perfect for groups where there is a need for separate 'space' (e.g. teenagers, people who snore, extended families, etc). This is the only room with no direct lake views.

Room #4: a smaller room with two double beds, a bathroom and great lake views.

Room #5: a medium sized room with a double bed and a bunk bed (2 singles), a bathroom, and good lake views.

The common area for this lodge includes a fridge, hot plate, microwave, coffee maker, dishes/cutlery, and dinner seating for four. The rest of the area has a fireplace, sofa, table and bookshelf with books and games to borrow.

This lodge is one of the best situated lodges on the lake – right beside both the Temagami Lakes Association (TLA) dock and Manito landing. The only difficulty is finding the payphone (one bay south of Manito landing) to call the lodge owners for a pickup. The best approach is to find the payphone, call for a pickup at either the TLA or Manito landing dock, then drive to the docks and park your car. Cellphones will typically have no service on the lake, so you’ll be forced to find the payphone (bring quarters!)

The lodge seems to be fair value at the $120-160/night range. Other lodges on the lake are more expensive.

Just to emphasize the view, one night a number of the guests stood out on the deck area watching an approaching electrical storm: the storm took a good 15 minutes to come toward the lodge, and it was great to watch the lightning, wind and rain approaching. Fifteen seconds before the storm hit the lodge, everyone ducked inside their rooms. Magical!

We stayed at Loon Lodge (http://www.loonlodge.com/) for two nights recently, and felt compelled to write a review. Firstly, you should know that Loon Lodge is technically on an island (but connected to the mainland by a small wooden walkway), and as such is not a "drive up" place to stay. It's a three minute trail walk from the Manito/Manitou landing parking lots B and C where most cottagers leave their cars. If trail-walking is not your thing, phone the lodge from the parking lot and the owners will gladly pick up you and your luggage and take you the few hundred metres by boat.

There are two types of accomodations: a two bedroom self contained cottage with cooking facilities, and five "lodge" rooms. Each lodge room has it's own bathroom and a mix of double beds/bunk beds (rooms sleep between 4 and 7 people), which becomes quite reasonable for larger groups. Two rooms (#s 3 & 4?) have an interior connecting door which is ideal for larger groups or extended families. What the Loon Lodge website does not mention is that there is a common area or 'lounge' accessible to all people staying in lodge rooms. This lounge has a fireplace, tables, couches, but most importantly also has a stove, microwave and fridge, tea and coffee-making supplies, utensils, etc, making the lodge rooms even more attractive to those on a budget. Most lodge rooms look out over the lake and a large wrap around deck make sunset-watching a must.

Arguably, the best feature of Loon Lodge are the owners, John and Jenny. From the moment we walked in until the moment we left, the owners were friendly, cheerful and always open to any request we had. Restaurant meals are cooked by the duo, and the meals can be described as tasty and hearty (but not necessarily calorie-concious!) 'comfort food'. The Lodge's french fries are a lake favourite and we saw many boaters stop in for a quick meal or takeaway. Breakfasts (eggs/bacon/toast, pancakes, etc) run about $6 while lunches and dinners (fish and chips, hamburgers, chicken caesar salad, etc) run about $9.

The Lodge restaurant doubles as the Office, and anyone intent on fishing will find live bait right next to the cold drinks in the fridge. While you're waiting for your meals to arrive, look up on the wall and see mounted 'trophy fish' taken from lake Temagami - a 40" muskellunge, a number of huge lake trout, walleye, bass, etc.

Who will Loon Lodge appeal to most? Probably two main groups: parents of Lake Temagami summer campers up for visitor's day, and those wishing to experience wilderness aspects of Lake Temagami (fishing, snow mobiling, kayaking, etc). For the first group the Lodge is ideally located - there is no need to book an early morning water taxi to get to Manito landing on visitor's day (unlike most other lodges on the lake). For the second group, the Lodge's owners rent out fishing boats and motors (and could probably arrange for a fishing guide if needed), and there's a dock for kayak/boat launching right in front of the restaurant. Float planes land in front of the dock and tie up while passengers enjoy a meal.

All in all, Loon Lodge is highly recommended for anyone looking for a comfortable, clean, budget-style lakeside lodge. And yes, the lodge is named appropriately - every morning when we walked down to the restaurant we saw loons right in front of the lodge!
