“Needs an update/spring clean”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

Very dated inside, half inch of dust on wall tops, beams and light fittings. Could do with a deep clean and coat of paint - fish cakes were not what we expected and tasted processed and bland. My roast dinner came with free piece of wire scourer. Hygiene of staff could do with improving - chef stroking dogs in bar etc.

“Scilly's different pub”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

All the pubs on St Mary's apart from this one are in the main town and to be honest they all have a slightly 'can't be bothered' feel to them. The Old Town Inn however, is a very pleasant change from this and stands head & shoulders above them all. We use this pub as much as possible during our visits and always receive a warm welcome from staff and locals alike. There's seems to always be a good choice of well kept real ales available, with regularly changing guest beers. We have found the food to be consistently excellent quality (apparently the head chef is actually the landlady so quality control 'from the top'!) with very generous portions and priced very reasonably. This pub is also the only one on the island to offer outdoor eating/drinking areas, with a beer garden at the rear as well as a lovely courtyard at the main front entrance. This is not an 'olde worlde' style establishment, having only been a pub since the late 1980s (or so we were told by a local character we got chatting to), but it just has a relaxed proper pub feel to it which just makes us enjoy every minute we spend there.

“A quiet place - average food”
Reviewed August 10, 2012

Cornish pasties - quite tasteless. Home brewed ciders were very nice. The good meal however was the ham egg and chips. Good size portions

“Friendly pub with a nice, airy dining room.”
Reviewed July 8, 2012

Booked in here for Sunday lunch while holidaying on St Mary's. The roast is offered in two sizes: The normal sized portion and also a small one, which is not just for children - being a small person I really appreciate this! Prices were £8.95/£6.95. It was quite tasty but the roast potatoes were a bit overcooked. The other vegs were french beans, carrots, cauli, red cabbage. For dessert I ordered cherry tart with clotted cream (£4.95) It sounded delicious but it was a bit of a let-down when it arrived because the pastry was hard and rather tasteless. It seemed to be plain shortcrust, not a sweet shortcrust or even a crushed sweetcrumb base which would have been nicer for a dessert. The filling was ordinary tinned cherry pie filling, the clotted cream with it was fine.

The service was good - very friendly barman and serving staff. My husband said the beer was great. The dining room is very nice - spacious and airy. There's a pleasant seating area outside too.
