“Holiday in a real Castle”
Reviewed January 17, 2012

This was not our first trip to the fortunate Isles but our first stay at the Star Castle.
Expensive, but the staff, food and it's location all made for a great winters break
The only draw back is the climb up the hill from the town Might be a bit much for less able bodies
I have had better breakfasts but the Dinner menu was varied (for a weeks stay) and the wine list was excellent.
The staff were knowledgable and helpful
And to stay in a real life castle was fabulous

Room Tip: The Castle rooms are quirky but great fun The garden rooms are bungalows set round a lawn

Staff were briliant - very helpful and friendly. Location is wonderful. Rooms very comfortable and family oriented. Kids loved the pool and were thrilled to borrow owner's dog to walk around Star Castle! Kids also LOVED the food, and so did we! Wines very good too. All in all, a wonderful place to stay. In the words of our eleven year old son " it was our best holiday ever!". As a Scillonian myself, I am of course in love with the place anyway!

The staff at the Star Castle couldn't have been any more friendly or helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. We asked for a bedside alarm clock and promptly received two!! The room, a garden suite was fantastic. We had wonderful views from our veranda over some of the other isles. We had a separate seating area with comfortable rattan style arm chairs, a table and hospitality tray with biscuits! The food in the restaurant was outstanding, all the dishes were beautifully presented including the 'amuse bouche' at the beginning of the meal. We chose to take our coffee and petit fours in the upstairs lounge although we could have stayed in the restaurant. breakfast was excellent with a large choice of options including smoked salmon, porridge, kippers and obviously the full English! On our first morning we had a visit from Tim, one of the local boatmen who asked if we were interested in a trip to the off islands. He was fantastic and we had a lovely day trip to Bryher and Tresco. Overall, we had a fabulous break, the scenery was stunning and will definitely return.

Room Tip: If you want tradition, go for a Castle room although the rooms aren't huge. If you want sometin...

What a truly magical place to stay. We cannot fault our three night anniversary break. The staff were fantastic, helpful, friendly and very eager to please. The food was just amazing, you really felt as if you were being spoilt. We had quite a small room but amazing views out of both windows. The turning down of the beds in the evening was a lovely touch as was the next day's menu on your pillow. Hot water was in abundance in the evening but was slightly hit amd miss in the morning but not an issue worth complaining about. Tim the captain of Calypso boat tours was brilliant and we can recommend the three island trip, he will come to the hotel every morning for you to book. My husband and I also Kayaked with Murray (he is well known on the island) and this was a fantastic experience. All in all a wonderful few days despite St Mary's shutting down for the season. We would love to go back some day and will definitely start saving to make sure that we do.

Room Tip: In the castle seemed much more romantic, the garden rooms had a butlins feel about them to look at b...

Stayed 2 nights at Star Hotel in August. We were in room 22 which had a seaview and balcony. The room was big and homely. The bathroom was a tad small. Decor was a bit old fashioned but it was what we expected. The good was excellent and staff were friendly. We had dinner at the restaurant in the castle itself one night and the other in the conservatory restaurant. Both evenings were very pleasant and had very different feels to them but equally as nice. Whist on the Isles of Scilly we visited Tressco - the gardens there are amazing and the beaches too.
We also went for a lovely walk on St Martins. We visited the bakery and had a delicious cornish pasty there. On St Mary's one should visit Juliet's garden restaurant where you can enjoy delicious cakes with a lovely view.

Room Tip: For the nicest views and experience I would go for the garden with a sea view option. Garden view o...

If you are looking for a place to have a special meal on the Isles of Scilly then you won’t go far wrong by booking the Star Castle. Evening meals do have to be booked.

The food is delicious and although expensive, is worth while when you consider the courses that you get and the quality of the food. The chef knows how to combine flavours and cook meat to a superb standard.

The Dungeon Bar is fantastic for a drink and lots of local banter!
