“Superb "Get away from it all" destination”
Reviewed June 23, 2010

My wife and I stayed for one of the 4 night romantic break packages which included the helicopter flight from Penzance to the island of Tresco where we were picked up and taken to the quay where a boat then picked us up and transported us over to the island of Bryher before finally being collected on one of just two cars that I saw on the island. The break also included dinner, bed and breakfast. The whole experience of travel despite 3 different modes of transport ran very smoothly and everyone was very polite.
On arrival at the hotel in this idyllic and unspoilt location we were met by very friendly staff who booked us in and ensured our bags were taken to our room (I mean suite). The suite consisted of a seperate double room, lounge and large bathroom. We had our own patio with furniture and looked out over the gardens and the sea. It was beautiful. If its relaxation you want, Bryher and this hotel is the place to be. Fantastic beaches, great views and few people (only 83 inhabitants). The hotel itself was equipped with sauna, jacuzzi and heated outdoor pool and a rudimentary pitch and putt golf course which was a bit of fun (and that is how it should be treated). The meals were excellent and all the staff we met were very friendly and clearly enjoyed their surroundings. We were spoken to by the manager, Phillip within a couple of hours of our arrival and saw him a few times during our stay. He clearly wanted to make us feel welcome and to ensure our stay was enjoyable. I was particulary impressed by Neil the restaurant manager who was very likeable and who ensured his staff were attentive but not overly fussing. After wondering what 4 days on the island would be like and whether we were likely to be bored prior to the holiday starting I can tell you that we were never once bored and did not want to leave. If you go to just relax then walks with frequent stops to take in the views and to sit on headlands or beaches and read, sketch or fall asleep will do the trick. No phones, no outside bustle and no street lights at night with just the hum of the sea in the background was just what the Dr. ordered.

My Partner and I visited Hell Bay in the beginning of May. We had a fantastic time, and it is without a doubt the best holiday we've ever had inside the UK. Upon our arrival we were greated by a very friendly porter called Ross, he was welcoming and polite and made us feel instantly at home. The reception staff were helpfull, friendly and personable at all times and we were soon on first name terms. Our room was very compfortable with fantastic views over the ocean. The decor of the whole hotel is beautiful and the gardens are well kept and very pretty. There is a fantastic Restaurant with great views from the bar terrace and large bay windows to watch the sun set over dessert. The food was fantastic and there was a new creative menu served up every night. We found the restaurant staff to be friendly and on the ball. Particulary the restaurant manager, who ensured we recieved 5 star treatment at all times. We have already booked our next stay at Hell Bay for next year.

My husband and I stayed at Hell Bay Hotel for 3 nights and just loved it. The hotel is simple yet thoughtful in its decor and service. The service is truly excellent - attentive yet unfussy - and one of the servers even remembered that I don't like ice in my water! A really lovely place with stunning views of the island. The food was very good at lunch, and a bit fussy (and not as good) at dinner, but the wine list was very good and the overall experience was excellent.

As it was 8.30pm at night I used the hotel's online booking service to select their most expensive suite for a weekend relaxing break. It had to be that suite as it was the only one available. We didn't mind as we really needed some R&R. I also booked helicopter flights online so we were all set up for our break.
The next morning at 10.30am we got a phone call from the hotel to say that the Manager had let the suite to somebody who had just rung so we couldn't have it. They said that he had taken a credit card deposit from these people so their booking was confirmed. None of the reception staff or the Manager had bothered to check the online bookings from the night before first. Apparently, as no deposit is taken with online bookings and they are not checked next morning they are meaningless - you are not 'booked'. Beware!

The hotel was recommended to us for our anniversary. We had a great room with a great view and loved the isolated location. BUT the food was very very average, we had 2 nice waitresses and 2 very very unfriendly ones. What really spoilt it for us was the attitude of the reception staff, they just didn't seem to care and were very unfriendly and unhelpful. Would we stay here again, absolutely not, hotels like this have to learn that they have to provide what they say they will provide and this one certainly does not.

I was treated to four nights here. A rare example of a posh hotel that's also aesthetically pleasing. Work by Hepworth, Heron, Hitchens and Hilton, among many others, on the walls and in the grounds. Beautifully decorated rooms with balconies or little patio gardens. Excellent food (especially the deserts, when we were there) and wine, and although I'm allergic to being called 'Sir', I found the staff likeable, too. Would I recommend it to a friend? I would if I had any friends who could afford it. As for the Scillies - no wonder Harold Wilson took early retirement!

My partner and i arrived on Bryher and were greeted by a charming young man who introduced himself as David, took our luggage ,before taking us to the Hell Bay Hotel On arrival we were greeted at the door by the hotel manager (Philip) and the hotels other resident greeter (Suzie) who is a springer spaniel.

We checked in with reception and were then shown to our room which was decorated in a New England style which looked very clean and fresh.

We had pre dinner drinks in very pleasant surroundings, the walls covered in a variety of stunning pieces of artwok. We found the staff to be pleasant and helpful over the course of our stay. The food we felt was of an extremely good standard .

There are plenty of good walks on the island and boat trips to the other islands, fishing trips, or just a boat trip to see the seals.

We met several people who stay on Hell Year year after year, and we can understand why. The beaches are beautiful and deserted and there is a calm about the place.

On the neighbouring island is the worls famous Tresco Abbey Gardens which are well worth a visit including Valhala a museum of ships figureheads. In the cafe in the gardens the local birds will eat your cake crumbs from your hand.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will be back.
