Just felt we were paying for the view only, and V expensive just for that. Staff were laid back as stated by other reviews but we felt a little bit to laid back!
Good points: beautiful walks around Bryher and great bird life. Also nice pool and spa room.

I just had to return it is such a joy to be able to say that Hell bay is still gorgeous, and contrary to some reports I still think it is the best hotel on The Scillies. The wonderful casual atmosphere is relaxing in the extreme. You cannot fail to be able to recharge and revitalise here, it makes you a new and improved person.
The food is still very good and the staff are delightful. Please give this a try if you need a real rest, it will renew you like no where else in the world.

Room Tip: All big and lovely

The location of this hotel is quite idyllic. They have wonderful, friendly and helpful staff and the standard of food is excellent. We enjoyed the artwork in the public areas and in our room. We shall certainly hope to return before long

We had visited this hotel on many occasions but never stayed......so what an amazing birthday treat from my husband, thank you! I think a 'sanctuary' rather than a hotel is more of an appropriate description for Hell Bay. We spent an idyllic 5 nights here with our two children and dog! Our suite was spacious with amazing views, immaculate in every way. Hell Bay is filled with art and sculptures bringing vibrant colours to all the rooms and outside areas. Every window has a unique view of the island. Food was exquisite with meat, fish and vegetables from the islands. Outdoor heated pool very inviting even on a windswept April day! All staff were attentive and made us feel so relaxed and welcome. A very magical place to go to....you really do forget the rest of the world is still out there!

We have been visiting Hell Bay ever since it opened as an hotel and it is always a special experience. The location is wonderful , the decor restful with many amazing pieces of art in all rooms, public and private, the service attentive and the food and drink delicious. There is a new chef who is rightly receiving many plaudits . It is a welcome haven after a bracing walk as well as an idyllic spot for romance - in fact I cannot think of an occasion for which it would not be suitable. On a good day, the blue skies, silver sand and turquoise sea are heavenly but we like it in all weathers. Highly recommended as a special treat and do not forget to visit Richard and Charlotte in their new and very tasteful gallery next to the shop. If you leave it without a purchase, you are made of stronger stuff than we are!

Hell Bay is noted as a luxury Hotel offing amongst other things, a Three AA Rosette Restaurant and rooms with Private Patio's. Sadly, we discovered none of these things.

'Private Patio' - it is indeed for private use, but the hotel room above has a Balcony, making it nothing like private.

Don't get me wrong, neither my wife or I are likely to want to go nude or romantically 'Al Fresco' ... but it's uncomfortable for both sets of guests when one party is chatting about their day only feet above/below you ... It does somewhat mean that these two shared space quickly become Single-Serving. A pity when you have paid such a large sum for it.

Dinner Included; The menu contained three Main dishes, two fish and Venison. I'm not a big fish eater and this left me with a selection of one. Not renowned for being a betting man, I declined to make a wager with the waitress that the Venison (Roasted, I believe) would be dry and tough... But when it arrived, I was unfortunately bang on the money!

Now, I don't think it takes a culinary genius to understand that venison is Game, it has almost no Fat and wont pan fry, it doesn't like to be roasted and it makes bloody awful burgers unless you add a fistful of Pork Belly. Unfortunately, Chef disagreed...

No sign of a good gravy filled pie that would have done Bambi proud... No, No... Lets roast the buggery out of it and serve...

The wine list is extensive and if your happy to dabble in South African or South American oddities, you'll be pleased. Unfortunately, the French or Italian selection was thin to say the least.

I do have to keep in mind that in Dorset, we are spoiled with a large selection of fantastic restaurants, all competing for customers with excellent standards and very high levels of service. I would recommend that Chef and the Hotel Manager take a trip to Bridport or Beaminster and try some competition.

The Good - The room was lovely, new bathroom and well equipped, lovely view and congenial staff. The Island is fantastic, the water colour will blow you away and the wildlife, both marine and avian make this a truly stunning location.

The Bad - If you're going to charge for a premium product, you better make sure it's actually premium.

Room Tip: don't pay a premium for a Patio or Balcony unless you happy to share or know that the room above...

My wife and I decided to visit the Isles of Scilly in August of this year and chose Hell Bay on the island of Bryher. We were met at Bryher Quay by a friendly porter and driven a short distance to the hotels' reception where we were greeted with warm welcomes from both the receptionists and the manager (and the two very friendly local dogs!). The standard of the room was what we expected, if not better, with lots of space and extremely comfy beds. The heated swimming pool provided a relaxing environment after a day of exploring the beautiful scenery and coastline the island has to offer. All of the meals we had were faultless, and the bar is elaborately decorated with beautiful pieces of art. The staff were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. I hope to come back to this hotel again and again and as soon as possible!
