“A Veneto Gem!”
Reviewed July 4, 2010

This was our first stay at Hotel Villa Abbazia in the small town of Follina in the foothills of the Italian Alps. This Relais and Chateaux property is very elegant and provides a high level of service in both the hotel and restaurant.

Our stay was in May of 2010 in the Magnolia Suite with a private terrace overlooking the gardens. The room began with a large entry area with an amore for our clothes and love seat. The main bedroom was very large with a bed sofa and large table. Fresh flowers and fruits were provided. The bathroom was nice sized with a small window that opened to let fresh air in. The motor driven shutters closed up the room every night so sleeping in was easy!

It is our experience that what separates good hotels from “great” properties is the service. The Hotel Villa Abbazia distanced it self from the competition by providing excellent service! Always Giulio provided a friendly smile and advice on the day’s activities. Securing a tour at a Prosecco Winery or how best to get back to the hotel from Cortina in the Italian Alps (think spiral staircase with tunnels for your car!) without revealing what surprise was in store!

Breakfast in an adjacent area to the lobby of the hotel was wonderful and traditional European in nature.

Dinning in the hotel restaurant was one of the trips highlights. The food was impeccably prepared with a level of detail sophistication and taste that beguiles this small town. I would have thought I was in Milan or Venice! We had three wonderful meals in the dinning room with equally wonderful wines!

My wife and I highly recommend this property. If you are planning on staying in the Veneto then stay at Hotel Villa Abbazia!

We enjoyed Villla Abbazia very much, especially the excellent service from Giovanni. He made us feel very welcome and saw to our every need. We had a great time visiting the Prosecco region due mostly to his advice on places to visit – especially local vineyards on the steep hillsides of the Dolomite foothills. We also went into Venice from the hotel, and found it was an easy 45 minute drive to the water taxis at Marco Polo airport. I was worried it would be a bit far to Venice from there, but it was fine and also really nice to come back to the peace and quiet of Follina after the tourist crowds of Venice. The town of Follina itself is not very interesting, and the hotel is located right in town – for some reason I had the impression from the website that it was out in the countryside, but this is not the case. The hotel is right on the main street of Follina and does not have extensive grounds, just a very small garden area with some lawn chairs and no pool.

We stayed in the Magnolia room in the Villa and it was beautiful, with two private terraces (pictures attached). A vase of fragrant roses from the garden and plate of homemade cookies on arrival were a nice touch. One warning to others: this property has rooms in the main building and also in a separate building called the Villa. Rooms in the Villa are more expensive, but are significantly nicer than those in the main building. This is not clear when you book via the hotel website. I was originally shown a couple of rooms in the main building and they were definitely not up to the usual Relais & Chateaux standard. In contrast, the Villa is just lovely and more in line with what you’d expect from a Relais & Chateaux property.

The hotel restaurant is very formal and pricey, but there are a couple of excellent restaurants in town just across the street from the Villa. Breakfast at the hotel was better than average because of the great baked goods – especially the fruit tarts and honey brioche made at the hotel. All in all, a very nice place to visit – and the friendliness and level of service of the staff here are outstanding.

This is a very lovely, small hotel with an elegant garden, fine food and rooms and a very warm, kind, considerate owner. As soon as we arrived, we felt personally welcomed--the owner even parked our car and then suggested lunch in the garden. Immediately after our arrival he arranged a tour of nearby Proseco producers and suggested a walk to the next village through woods and by a stream. We had a very romantic, candlelit, delicious dinner with wine pairings and local seasonal ingredients (such as fresh local white asparagus) in the small dining room. Our room was pretty though a little small, but the balcony overlooking the garden, bouquet of fresh roses, very luxurious bathroom, and comfortable bed more than made up for the size. Villa Abbazia was one of the high points of our ten day trip through northern Italy, and I would highly recommend it. The service and food were everything you would expect in a top quality five star hotel.

This is a tiny town, but the hotel is a nice stop to visit the surrounding Prosecco Road and Cortina d'Ampezzo. It also relatively close to Asolo, Treviso and Venice. It is a Relais Chateaux which makes it a reliable place to eat and stay. The service is personal and familiar.

Stayed here for 3 nights traveling from Bergamo to the Dolomites. Accomodations were lovely althogh this 5 star is in the wrong place. Follina is a small town in the prosecco wine region where a suitable 3 star would suffice. The Hotel Villa Abazzia is simply too much for the town. We certainly have no gripes regarding the hotel itself. The place is lovely and the service staff excellent. Also a good base for visiting Valdobiene, Venice and Cortina De Impezzo (high in the Dolomites) Approximetely 1 hour to all locations. Although we didn't miss it, a Hotel of this quality, and in this price range, should have a pool. Next trip we'll probably stay in Cortina. Many choices for accomodations and a happening town with much more to see and do. Although we visited in summer Cortina is surely a winter paradise if your inclined to winter sports.

I have now stayed at the Villa three times, and I cannot wait to go back. This property is a beautiful home managed by an even more beautiful family. Giovanni and his sisters provide a level of friendly service that simply doesn't exist any more at four star hotels in Italy. I love food, prosecco and biking, and this abbazia is perfect for all three. The foothills of the Dolomites are ideal for cycling, and the food at the hotel and nearby is extremely good. Paul T

We stayed for 4 nights in March. I cant say enough about the staff: they were completely helpful and friendly and attended our every need. We stayed in the "Sandra Bullock Suite" which was a 2 level room nicely appointed and cozy. Breakfast each morning was fantastic. The hotel restaurant "Le Corte" was amazing and this meal was one of the highlights of our trip. I am surprised more has not been written on it. We also ate at the restaurants Mazzeri and Caminetto which were also excellent. At Al Caminetto the owner of 40+ years cooks your steak in the center of the restaurant over hot coals. (I still dream of the Bistecca he cooked us). We used Follina as a base to explore the entire region and it is never for than 30-45 minutes away from the major attractions. We toured the Prosecco trail, saw the villas of Palladio and went into the Dolomites. Overall I would highly recommend Villa Abbazia and Follina when in the Veneto.
